Waymo Plans Driverless Rides in Germany by 2027, Entering Third International Market
Alphabet's self-driving technology company, Waymo, has announced its intention to launch robotaxi services in Germany in 2027. This move signifies Waymo's expansion into its third international market and its first venture into the European Union.
The company will commence a phased testing program in Munich in the coming weeks, with a public launch slated for the end of next year. This initial testing phase will focus on creating detailed high-definition maps of the city, training its autonomous driving specialists, and adapting its software to accommodate Munich's unique traffic conditions.
"Munich is a global center for innovation in mobility and engineering, and establishing a presence here represents a significant step in our worldwide growth," stated Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana.
Waymo is currently the leading player in the U.S. robotaxi sector, despite the industry being in its nascent stages. The company operates in 11 U.S. cities and is working to expand its services to an additional 19. Recently, Waymo announced its expansion into San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, Florida, and Denver.
Munich becomes the third international city where Waymo has announced expansion plans, following previous announcements for London and Tokyo.
As of March, Waymo has accumulated nearly 221 million miles of fully autonomous driving.
