UFC Champion Suggests Organization May Halt Signing Dagestani and Russian Fighters

Sports news ยป UFC Champion Suggests Organization May Halt Signing Dagestani and Russian Fighters

A highly respected figure in mixed martial arts has recently suggested that the UFC might be ceasing its recruitment of fighters from Dagestan and Russia.

Over the years, athletes from Dagestan, renowned for their world-class Sambo and Judo skills, have demonstrated an exceptional ability to dominate opponents, particularly strikers, while sustaining minimal damage. Khabib Nurmagomedov established a benchmark for this style, and currently, pound-for-pound king and two-division champion Islam Makhachev, along with fighters like Umar Nurmagomedov and many others, are continuing this legacy.

In parallel, fighters like Usman Nurmagomedov have achieved success outside the UFC, showcasing the same dominant Dagestani fighting approach.

However, a segment of the mixed martial arts community expresses a preference for more action-packed striking exchanges over wrestling-heavy strategies. Consequently, athletes with strong wrestling foundations sometimes feel compelled to adapt their fighting style to appeal to fans, matchmakers, and potentially earn performance bonuses.

Currently, prominent Russian and Dagestani fighters such as Khamzat Chimaev, Islam Makhachev, Umar Nurmagomedov, and Movsar Evloev have, at different stages of their careers, faced scrutiny for their predominantly wrestling-based techniques. In response, some have chosen to expand their skill sets beyond their comfort zones to demonstrate their well-rounded abilities.

Most recently, Khamzat Chimaev lost his title to Sean Strickland at UFC 328. In that bout, “Borz” opted to engage in a striking battle rather than employing his signature takedowns to control Strickland on the ground.

Similarly, Movsar Evloev, aiming to impress matchmakers, chose to engage in striking exchanges with Lerone Murphy at UFC London. He found success on the feet and is now a strong contender for the next featherweight title shot.

Demetrious Johnson Relays Rumor to Georges St-Pierre Regarding UFC’s Stance on Dagestani and Russian Signings

During a recent conversation with Georges St-Pierre, Demetrious Johnson disclosed hearing a rumor that the UFC is no longer actively signing Russian or Dagestani fighters. He elaborated:

“I recently heard a rumor that they’re not permitting any more Dagestanis or Russian individuals into the organization, because they are just that exceptionally good!… Can you imagine more Umar Nurmagomedov? A fighter who is a striker and can also take you down and finish you on the ground, or submit you.”
