Sports news ยป Brady Tkachuk Acquired by the Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers have made a blockbuster move on Sunday, just before the 2026 NHL Draft, acquiring forward Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators. This significant acquisition was announced by General Manager Bill Zito.

In exchange for Tkachuk, the Panthers are sending the 9th and 25th overall selections in the 2026 NHL Draft, along with a first-round pick in 2029 and a second-round pick in 2030, to the Senators.

Despite previous public denials of a trade, it has been confirmed that Brady Tkachuk expressed a desire to be moved. After submitting a list of preferred destinations and waiving his no-move clause, he was ultimately traded to Florida. Sources indicate that the Panthers and Senators had been in negotiations since Saturday evening, with Florida expressing confidence in completing the deal.

Tkachuk, who has two years remaining on his contract with an $8,105,714 annual cap hit, reportedly sought a move to a team where he could compete for a Stanley Cup and reunite with his brother, Matthew Tkachuk. There is speculation that the camaraderie built during Team USA’s gold medal victory at the World Championship played a role in recruiting top American players to join forces in the NHL.

Other teams on Tkachuk’s trade list included the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, and Carolina Hurricanes. However, the Ottawa Senators ultimately struck the best deal available given the circumstances of trading their captain.

This move by Bill Zito was preceded by another significant transaction earlier on Sunday. The Panthers traded Mackie Samoskevich to the Seattle Kraken for the 25th pick in the 2026 Draft and a conditional second-round pick in 2026 (the higher of the Columbus or Winnipeg picks).

The acquisition of Brady Tkachuk is seen as a strategic move to bolster the Panthers’ forward depth and enhance their chances of winning the Stanley Cup. With Aleksander Barkov, Anton Lundell, and Sam Bennett already forming a strong center core, Tkachuk’s addition further strengthens their wing position.

The Panthers may not be finished with their roster adjustments. Questions remain about their goaltending situation, with speculation surrounding potential moves for Sergei Bobrovsky, Connor Hellebuyck, or Jordan Binnington. The team’s ability to make further trades will depend on their willingness to move key assets like Carter Verhaeghe, especially if Anton Lundell is considered untouchable.

Fans will be watching closely to see how the Panthers continue to shape their roster as they pursue another championship.
