The Nashville Predators are actively seeking a new General Manager, but no candidate has yet to fully impress the organization. Minority owner Nick Saban is reportedly spearheading efforts to cultivate a new culture within the team.
There was an expectation that Tom Fitzgerald, the former General Manager of the New Jersey Devils, would be a strong contender given his existing connections to the Predators. However, the team is now looking for an individual with a broader range of experience from outside the organization.
Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period discussed the prolonged GM search in Nashville on Sirius XM NHL Network’s Power Play Segment with Steve Kouleas and Craig Button. Pagnotta indicated that the initial assumption of Fitzgerald being the likely choice might be premature.
Pagnotta explained that Nick Saban, along with other minority owners, is involved in the search. Their focus extends beyond just hockey operations to encompass a more comprehensive view of organizational management. This broader perspective suggests they are considering candidates who possess a wider skillset in running an organization.
Some observers believe that potential candidates currently holding management positions with playoff-bound teams are awaiting the conclusion of their respective playoff runs before proceeding with further interviews. This strategic timing is intended to ensure a thorough evaluation process.
It’s worth noting that when Barry Trotz stepped down to assist in the GM search, no specific timeline was established. Trotz remains under contract for another year, and while the Predators ideally wish to finalize the decision before July, they are prioritizing finding the right individual(s) to spearhead the team’s future direction and reshape the roster.
Craig Button commented on the intriguing involvement of Nick Saban, a minority owner with a football background, in the search. While acknowledging Saban’s exceptional coaching achievements at the University of Alabama, Button expressed his fascination with how organizations sometimes face challenges when decision-makers transition between different sports. He believes that while Saban is a highly successful football coach, the direct translation of his methods to hockey management remains a point of interest.
It will be noteworthy to observe which playoff teams the Predators might target for potential candidates. This could include individuals like Darren Yorke in Carolina or someone similar to Martin Madden in Anaheim.

NHL Rumors: Nick Saban Wants the Right Person in Nashville
The Nashville Predators continue their search for a new general manager. Thus far, no candidate has truly impressed them, with minority owner Nick Saban leading the initiative to change the culture in Nashville.
Many had assumed that Tom Fitzgerald, the former General Manager of the New Jersey Devils, would have already been selected, given his ties to the organization. However, the Predators are looking for a well-rounded individual from outside the organization.
As Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period explained on Sirius XM NHL Network’s Power Play Segment with Steve Kouleas and Craig Button, when asked about the delay in Nashville’s decision-making process.
Steve Kouleas: “So, just to double-check here, are we still waiting on Tom Fitzgerald in Nashville, or is there something else, just for my own clarity, Dave?”
Dave Pagnotta: “I mean, in Nashville. I don’t think it’s as clear-cut as it might have seemed a week or so ago, that it’s likely to be Fitzy in Tennessee. It sounds like Nick Saban and some of the other minority owners are part of that search. They’re looking at a broader scope, not just exclusively hockey operations and how this organization will be run moving forward, but also taking into account the other elements of running an organization.”
So, some believe that there are individuals up for the job who are currently management on playoff teams. They are waiting for this round to conclude before conducting additional interviews and proceeding.
Remember, guys, when Barry Trotz announced that he was going to transition out and help find a new GM, they didn’t put a timeline on things. He’s still under contract for another year. Clearly, they’d want to get this done between now and July, but they’re taking their time to ensure they find the right individual(s) to go in there and reshape that team moving forward.”
Craig Button: “I mean, it’s interesting to hear that Nick Saban, a minority owner with a football background, is now trying to help. Organizations wonder why they end up in the problems they do. And nothing against Nick Saban. I mean, bottom line, he is a great, great football coach.
What he did at the University of Alabama, we all know that. But, it’s fascinating to me when we talk about the process, and you talk about Nashville, I think Nashville has a lot of good young players. I think they have a lot of good people in their organization. David Poile ran that first-rate, top-notch for years.”
It is interesting how good decision-makers in one field cannot always translate directly to other sports. Saban built two organizations with a consistent process, one at LSU and one at the University of Alabama. He has standards and practices that all winning organizations need. Saban knows what to look for in a person who can lead not only the hockey operations department but also the business operations. Those methods, practices, and standards are transferable.
It will be interesting to see which teams they target that are still in the playoffs. Could it be Darren Yorke in Carolina or a Martin Madden type in Anaheim?
