Stokes Shines as Durham Dominates Derbyshire for Promotion Boost

Ben Stokes delivered a match-winning performance with both bat and ball, spearheading Durham to a resounding 338-run victory against Derbyshire with a day to spare. This dominant win significantly enhances Durham's prospects for promotion in the Rothesay County Championship.

Following his impressive first-innings contribution of a half-century and two wickets, Stokes remained unbeaten on 66 in the second innings and then took a remarkable 5-17. This bowling effort dismissed Derbyshire for just 84 runs as they attempted a formidable chase of 423 for victory.

In Derbyshire's first innings, resuming on 127-6 and trailing by 156, they were all out for 156. Matthew Potts was the chief destroyer for Durham, claiming 5-46.

Durham's opening batsman, Ben McKinney, played a brilliant innings of 140 from 162 deliveries, supported by Will Rhodes' 52. Stokes then contributed a swift, unbeaten 66 off just 55 balls, enabling Durham to declare at 295-6.

Stokes continued his impactful bowling in Derbyshire's second innings, taking three wickets in rapid succession. Potts also contributed with 3-22 as Derbyshire's batting order collapsed.

  • League leaders Nottinghamshire secured a 145-run win against Surrey at The Oval, despite Ollie Pope's century. Nottinghamshire's bowlers Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington shared seven wickets, after Joe Clarke's 95 had guided Nottinghamshire to 306.

  • Essex, after following on against Somerset, reached 314 for three thanks to an unbeaten 105 from Charlie Allison, leading by three runs with seven wickets remaining.
  • Gloucestershire's Ollie Price (63 not out) and James Bracey (45 not out) helped their team reach 248-3, leading Worcestershire by 131 runs with seven wickets in hand.
  • Northamptonshire's opener Ricardo Vasconcelos scored 100, putting his team in a strong position against Lancashire. Northamptonshire declared at 298-4 and took two early wickets, leaving Lancashire needing 422 for victory.
  • Middlesex reached 184-4 in their second innings, requiring 170 runs to win against Kent, who were bowled out for 254.
