World's Top Olive Oil Company Faces Takeover Bids Amid Stock Surge

Shares of Spanish olive oil giant Deoleo experienced a significant increase of over 17% on Wednesday morning, driven by an escalating takeover competition for the world's largest bottler and marketer of olive oil.

This stock performance follows reports indicating that the Spanish agricultural cooperative Dcoop has submitted a bid of 470 million euros ($545 million) for Deoleo, positioning itself at the forefront of a bidding war that also includes companies from Italy, France, and Australia.

Deoleo had not provided immediate comment when contacted by CNBC.

Spain, along with Italy and Greece, is a leading global producer of olive oil and a key influencer of international prices for this commodity.

The price of olive oil has been subject to considerable fluctuations from one season to another. This volatility is largely attributed to ongoing challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and the persistent pressures of pests and diseases. However, Deoleo, the company behind well-known olive oil brands like Bertolli and Carbonell, recently communicated to CNBC that a period of extreme market instability has definitively transitioned into more settled market conditions.
