Jack Della Maddalena Clarifies His Disappointed Reaction During Islam Makhachev Bout
MMA fighter Jack Della Maddalena has finally disclosed the true reason behind his visibly disappointed demeanor during his highly anticipated fight against Islam Makhachev. Last year, "JDM" secured the 170-pound championship by defeating Makhachev's training partner and friend, Belal Muhammad. This victory prompted Makhachev to vacate his lightweight title and move up a division.
However, Della Maddalena's reign as champion was brief, lasting only a few months. He was dethroned by Makhachev in the latter's welterweight debut at UFC 322.
The Dagestani grappling specialist displayed overwhelming superiority and skill against "JDM." Makhachev accumulated an impressive 19 minutes and 10 seconds of control time, executed four takedowns, and landed a total of 140 strikes, ultimately securing a dominant unanimous decision victory.
During the championship rounds, Della Maddalena's evident disappointment sparked speculation among commentators and fans alike, who believed he might be injured, preventing him from defending against takedowns or regaining his feet. Even his coach, prior to the final round, urged "JDM" to "take that fu***ing sad look off his face" if he hoped to avoid losing the title and give his all in the last five minutes.
In a recent interview with Australian MMA, Jack Della Maddalena confirmed that his disappointment stemmed from a feeling of underperformance at UFC 322. He admitted he was unable to execute his intended game plan, which led to his dejected expression and the impression of being "broken" in the later stages of the fight. He stated:
"It was just a bit of disappointment for not being able to do what I wanted to do, knowing I was having a poor performance. I look back on it and there’s things I should’ve been doing more of."
Jack Della Maddalena Eager to "Outclass" His Next Opponent
Jack Della Maddalena is now eager for a swift rematch with Islam Makhachev to reclaim the title he lost at UFC 322.
To earn another shot at the championship, "JDM" must first overcome knockout artist Carlos Prates at UFC Perth on May 2. Della Maddalena is confident in his abilities, believing he possesses all the tools necessary to "outclass" "The Nightmare." He shared with Australian MMA:
"He’s [Carlos Prates] a fan favorite for good reason. He’s an exciting guy. Good striking battle against two of the top contenders. I feel like I’ve got the skillset to beat him. I feel like I can outclass him."
