Colby Covington Drags Jorge Masvidal To Court Over Infamous 2022 Miami Beach Attack

The protracted dispute between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal has once again escalated to legal proceedings.

Their relationship, which began as a close alliance spanning almost a decade of training at American Top Team, deteriorated significantly as their careers advanced. Ego and deep-seated resentments transformed what was once a friendship into one of the UFC's most bitter rivalries.

This intense animosity eventually culminated in the Octagon at UFC 272. There, Covington, known as "Chaos," definitively bested his former training partner, securing a clear unanimous decision victory.

Many anticipated that their rivalry would conclude after their cage encounter, but the animosity only intensified. Merely weeks following their fight, Masvidal, known as “Gamebred,” ambushed Covington outside Papi Steak in Miami Beach as he was leaving the establishment. This incident led to serious legal repercussions for Masvidal, who was subsequently charged with aggravated battery and criminal mischief.

After a series of court hearings, the former BMF titleholder's criminal case concluded in November 2023 when he pleaded guilty. He received a sentence of time already served and was mandated to cover the associated legal expenses. Despite facing severe potential penalties, including up to 15 years in prison, Masvidal avoided any further incarceration.

Now, in April 2026, Colby Covington has initiated another lawsuit against Jorge Masvidal, reigniting the legal consequences stemming from the original attack.

Covington Seeks Over $50,000 in Damages from Masvidal for 2022 Miami Assault

On March 23, Covington formally filed a civil lawsuit in Miami-Dade County, targeting Masvidal and seeking more than $50,000 in compensation for injuries and damages incurred during the 2022 steakhouse attack.

Court documents detail that Covington's legal team asserts his decisive victory at UFC 272 infuriated Masvidal. The filings further highlight Masvidal's alleged post-fight threat, where he declared, "if I see him out in the streets, I’m going to give him everything I got to break his f*cking jaw.”

Covington's attorneys contend that Masvidal's attack was premeditated and intended to cause significant harm. They claim "Chaos" sustained both head and other physical injuries, and additionally, his Rolex watch suffered approximately $15,000 in damage.

Colby Covington has formally requested a jury trial. However, a specific court date for the newly filed lawsuit has not yet been scheduled.
