The Reborn Dunedin Golf Club: A Florida Classic Restored to Donald Ross's Vision
Nearly a century after its inception, the historic Dunedin Golf Club, a municipal course north of Tampa, has been meticulously restored to its original glory. A significant $6 million renovation, spearheaded by Ross specialist Kris Spence, has authentically revived the course, allowing golfers to experience Donald Ross's architectural genius precisely as he intended.
A Legacy Rediscovered
Opened in 1927 as Dunedin Isles Golf Club, the course was lauded by Ross himself as one of his finest works, celebrated for its undulating terrain, natural water features, and strategic hazards. However, subsequent decades of alterations gradually diminished the integrity of the original design, shrinking greens and modifying bunkers, thereby softening Ross's distinctive Golden Age philosophy. The city's decision to undertake a comprehensive restoration was a profound commitment to preserving its architectural heritage and revitalizing the community.
Unearthing Ross's Design
For Kris Spence, the restoration was akin to an archaeological excavation. He discovered that the greens had shrunk significantly, obscuring Ross's intricate contours and pin placements. "When we peeled back the layers, we found the original greens buried but intact," Spence revealed. This remarkable find enabled his team to meticulously reconstruct the greens, bunkers, and fairway contours with extraordinary precision, bringing back shapes and elevations lost for over 75 years. The course now demands creative, precise shot-making, reintroducing the Scottish-influenced bump-and-run style characteristic of Ross's designs.
Harmonizing History with Modern Golf
While deeply rooted in historical accuracy, the restoration also considers contemporary golf. Blair Kline, Dunedin's General Manager of Golf Operations, acknowledges that Ross could not have foreseen today's equipment or green speeds. "Now we have the course we believe he would design," Kline states. The original routing is maintained, but some bunkers were strategically repositioned to accommodate modern distances, while all original pin placements were reinstated, preserving the strategic intent of each hole.
A Pillar of American Golf History
Dunedin Golf Club holds a significant place in American golf history. From 1945, it served as the PGA of America's headquarters, renamed PGA National Golf Club. For nearly two decades, it hosted 18 consecutive Senior PGA Championships and the inaugural PGA Merchandise Show in 1954. Legends like Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, and Babe Didrikson Zaharias graced its fairways during this era, making it a hub for professional golf and a source of community pride. In 2014, its legacy was further cemented with its addition to the National Register of Historic Places. This recent restoration has breathed new life into that legacy, establishing it as an essential destination for enthusiasts of Golden Age architecture.
A Modern Municipal Treasure
Today, Dunedin Golf Club stands proudly among Florida's top municipal courses, offering exceptional value with 18-hole rates ranging from $85 to $140, and even lower for local residents. The restoration has significantly boosted interest in Dunedin as a destination. "People are going out of their way to come here and play it," Kline observes, noting its positive impact on local businesses, tourism, and civic pride. The course has re-emerged as a central element of Dunedin's identity, bridging its rich past with a promising future.
A Masterpiece for Future Generations
Almost a century after Donald Ross first envisioned it, Dunedin Golf Club has been impeccably restored to its intended brilliance. Thanks to the city's unwavering commitment and Kris Spence's masterful craftsmanship, golfers can now experience a true Ross masterpiece in its purest form, once again shaping golf history, one perfectly restored green and one memorable round at a time.
