Toronto Maple Leafs Make Coaching Change, Part Ways with Craig Berube

Sports news » Toronto Maple Leafs Make Coaching Change, Part Ways with Craig Berube

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced a significant coaching change, confirming their decision to part ways with head coach Craig Berube. This move signals a new direction for the organization.

In a statement released by General Manager John Chayka, he expressed gratitude for Berube’s contributions. “Craig is a tremendous coach and an even better person,” Chayka stated. “This decision is more reflective of an organizational shift and an opportunity for a fresh start than it is an evaluation of Craig. We are grateful for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the Maple Leafs organization and wish Craig and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”

The departure of Berube comes as no surprise, especially following the dismissal of former General Manager Brad Treliving. The lack of synergy between Berube and the team this season, partly attributed to roster changes, has been evident. The new administration, led by GM Chayka and Senior Executive Advisor Mats Sundin, sought to bring in a new coach to guide the team’s future direction. Reports indicate that Chayka and Sundin met with Berube over the weekend to discuss the team’s situation.

Berube was in the second year of a four-year contract signed before the 2024-25 season, a deal initiated by the previous GM. The Maple Leafs will reportedly owe Berube approximately $4.5 million over the next two years, unless he secures another coaching position elsewhere.

While Berube’s tenure wasn’t solely due to his coaching abilities, as roster limitations and player injuries impacted the team’s performance compared to the 2024-25 season, the team’s stylistic fit was a concern. Despite support from MLSE CEO Keith Pelley, the Maple Leafs are prioritizing a fresh start. This change may also be a factor in discussions to retain star player Auston Matthews, with further meetings expected in the coming weeks.

Berube, a Stanley Cup champion with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, is a respected figure in the league and is expected to find new coaching opportunities. The Maple Leafs now join the Los Angeles Kings and potentially the Edmonton Oilers in their search for a new head coach. Speculation also surrounds the potential candidacy of Bruce Cassidy, who is still under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights, or the possibility of the Maple Leafs opting for a first-time head coach.
