Great Britain Unveils 2026 IIHF World Championship Roster Featuring Six Debutants

July 11, 2026Pablo Navarro3 мин

Great Britain has officially announced its roster for the 2026 IIHF World Championship, which includes six players set to make their highly anticipated debuts on the international stage. Leading this group of newcomers is Coventry Blaze netminder Mat Robson, who joins the national team for the first time since becoming eligible.

The 29-year-old, once a prospect for the Minnesota Wild, has impressed with a .922 save percentage across 37 regular-season games this term, his second in the Elite League.

Joining Robson as a first-time international call-up is 32-year-old defenceman Travis Brown, who has transitioned to represent Great Britain. Brown contributed 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in 50 regular-season matches for the Guildford Flames.

Further bolstering the defence, Dundee's Kris Inglis (27) will make his World Championship debut, while 28-year-old Brad Jenion earns his first national team selection since 2018.

In the forward lines, Coventry Blaze's Jack Hopkins has been promoted to the senior squad after an impressive U20 career. Sam Lyne, committed to Colgate University for the 2026-27 NCAA season, also graduates from the U20 setup.

Roster Analysis: Great Britain's Chances in the Top Pool

Returning to the World Championship's top division, Great Britain aims to make a statement and seize a vital opportunity. Placed in Group A with Austria and Hungary, Pete Russell's team enters the tournament with a realistic prospect of avoiding immediate relegation, possessing the talent to achieve this goal.

Mat Robson's inclusion is a significant boost for Team GB. The Mississauga-born goaltender has demonstrated exceptional performance for the Blaze, instrumental in guiding Coventry to the Challenge Cup final and maintaining an impressive .922 save percentage during the regular season. At 6-foot-3, Robson provides a strong presence and consistently gives his team a winning chance, a quality that could be pivotal if he secures a starting role over veteran netminders Ben Bowns and Jackson Whistle.

Travis Brown is expected to bring robust two-way play and extensive professional experience to Great Britain's defensive unit, complementing existing veterans like Mark Richardson and Nathanael Halbert.

Forward Liam Kirk remains a vital asset for the team's ambitions of retaining their top-tier status. The Maltby native enjoyed an explosive season, tallying 55 points (32 goals, 23 assists) in 52 DEL games, placing him fifth in overall league scoring.

While staying in the top flight is always challenging for Great Britain, the current roster appears well-equipped to avoid an immediate drop back to Division 1A.
