Fife Flyers Secure Garet Hunt for Second Season, Appointing Him as Assistant Coach

The Fife Flyers have made their initial offseason move by re-signing Garet Hunt for another season, demonstrating a commitment to their established team ethos. In addition to his playing duties, the experienced forward will also serve as an assistant coach.

Hunt, 38, captained the Flyers during the 2025-26 season, contributing 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) and accumulating 174 penalty minutes over 55 games. While his tenure included disciplinary actions such as a nine-game suspension and three fines from the Elite League Department of Player Safety, notably a six-game ban for an on-ice incident, these statistics only paint part of the picture.

The Canadian player has become a fan favorite in Fife, playing a significant role in maintaining team unity during a period of transition for the club under new ownership. Hunt's aggressive and uncompromising style of play, often pushing boundaries, resonates deeply with the supporters at the Fife Ice Arena. Despite his 5-foot-9 frame, he plays with a larger presence and is recognized as a strong leader, both on and off the ice – a crucial quality given his expanded role for the upcoming season.

Hunt began his professional career in 2008 with the ECHL's Stockton Thunder, where he spent seven seasons, including four as captain. He concluded his 13-year ECHL career with stints at the Alaska Aces, Jacksonville IceMen, Wheeling Nailers, and South Carolina Stingrays, accumulating 261 points (106 goals, 155 assists) and 2,807 penalty minutes in 776 appearances.

His international experience began in 2019 with Kunlun Red Star in the KHL, where he registered three points in 68 games across two spells. Prior to joining the Flyers, Hunt played in the Erste Liga for CSM Corona Brasov and DVTK Jegesmedvek, scoring 43 points (14 goals, 29 assists) in 54 games.

Hunt's re-signing signifies a clear statement of intent from the Fife Flyers. It indicates that the team will continue to prioritize physicality and grit in their roster construction. Furthermore, his appointment as assistant coach suggests that a new head coach is likely to be named soon, filling the vacancy left by Jamie Russell in February.
