Ronda Rousey’s “Road House” Decision: Script Quality Over Haste

Sports news » Ronda Rousey’s “Road House” Decision: Script Quality Over Haste

Former MMA fighter Ronda Rousey initially had a role lined up for the “Road House” remake, a project that eventually saw Conor McGregor take the stage. Rousey, speaking to Complex, shed light on why she ultimately passed on the opportunity. Her decision underscores a critical aspect of filmmaking in Hollywood: the paramount importance of a strong script.

The initial plan for Rousey was to step into a prominent action role, signaling Hollywood’s interest in building major franchises around combat athletes. However, she found herself in a familiar situation, unwilling to proceed without material that met her high standards.

Ronda Rousey’s Reasoning for Declining “Road House”: A Focus on Script Integrity

“I think the script is so important,” Rousey stated. “We just never got a script that was 100% there. I think that people rushing a project and making a movie happen when the script isn’t there is why bad movies happen.”

Rousey’s stance wasn’t about being overly selective but about ensuring quality. She even consulted with Lisa Niemi, the widow of Patrick Swayze and a participant in the 2024 version of “Road House,” for her blessing and advice.

Rousey recounted their conversation: “I actually spoke to Patrick Swayze’s widow, and she was like, ‘I want to get her blessing to do it.’ And she was like, ‘Just make sure it doesn’t suck.’ And I’m like, ‘Well, that’s a lot of pressure.’” She admitted, “I never got to a place where it wouldn’t have sucked.”

By the time script issues persisted, the industry had already moved on. With multiple “Road House” remakes in various stages of development or completion, revisiting the material felt less compelling. Instead of forcing a project that didn’t feel right, Rousey redirected her attention to future ventures.

During her interview, Rousey highlighted a perceived gap in action cinema: the absence of a film featuring two women who are adept both on camera and in fighting. She expressed interest in a potential collaboration with Gina Carano, another MMA standout who has demonstrated her on-screen presence in projects like “Haywire” and “The Mandalorian.”

Regarding the 2024 “Road House” film, Rousey confessed she hasn’t watched much of it due to her young children. Her viewing habits are now dominated by animated films, with her movie-watching often interrupted. She managed to catch glimpses of the beginning and the ending fight scenes. Ultimately, Rousey’s decision emphasizes the value of knowing when to decline a project that doesn’t meet creative standards, even when life’s demands and industry momentum push in another direction.
