There is a strong indication that Sergei Bobrovsky and the Florida Panthers will find a way to reach a contract agreement. Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period discussed the situation with Erika Watcher on NHL Network, addressing the possibility of Bobrovsky departing Florida.

“Let’s turn our attention to the back-to-back champions,” Watcher began. “They are expected to contend again next season, and while they’ll benefit from this rest, they might be doing so with a new goaltender. What do you anticipate Sergei Bobrovsky’s market to be as he heads into unrestricted free agency?”

Pagnotta responded, “Well, his preference is to stay in Florida, Erika. He wants to remain there, and by all accounts, he’s seeking term on a new contract. I’m not sure if he’ll follow the exact path of players like Brad Marchand in securing a longer-term deal with spread-out money, but it appears that’s what he’s aiming for. These discussions have been ongoing since before the trade deadline, which is partly why you heard his name circulating.”

“Teams like Vegas and Montreal expressed interest in Sergei Bobrovsky. However, given their current positions, they are in a good place. Other teams will be closely monitoring their goaltending situations and Bobrovsky’s status. It wouldn’t surprise me if he waits until July 1st to fully gauge the interest in his services, but his primary goal remains to stay in Florida. I believe the Panthers are keen to keep him, but they will also conduct their due diligence and explore other options should Bobrovsky depart.”

“One player I think they might have on their radar is St. Louis’s Jordan Binnington, who is entering the final year of his contract. Again, their priority is to re-sign Bob, but Florida will evaluate their alternatives if that doesn’t happen.”

Bobrovsky was a subject of trade speculation in the past, with local interest sometimes being a factor. The Panthers’ starting goaltender made his desire to remain in Florida clear after the trade deadline. General Manager Bill Zito and the players are committed to keeping Bobrovsky, recognizing their championship aspirations with him in net.

However, this is a business. Bobrovsky is 38 years old. The question is whether the Panthers are willing to offer him a four or five-year contract, or if a two or three-year deal would be more prudent. An ideal contract structure might involve one-year deals with signing bonuses to assist the Panthers with salary cap management.

The prevailing sentiment is that Bobrovsky and the Panthers will reach an agreement, as this is ultimately a negotiation. Nevertheless, one source commented, “It would be shocking if Bobrovsky reached July 1st.”

Could he secure an annual average value (AAV) of around $6 million to $7 million? It will be fascinating to observe how the Panthers and Sergei Bobrovsky navigate this situation. If they are unable to come to terms, would they consider trading their ninth overall pick to acquire a goaltender such as Connor Hellebuyck, Binnington, or another option?
