Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka is reportedly set to meet with star player Auston Matthews in Arizona in the coming days. Additionally, Chayka is scheduled to meet with head coach Craig Berube this weekend.

Earlier this week, insights from James Mirtle of The Athletic suggested that candid discussions between Chayka, Mats Sundin, and the players might lead to a coaching change. Mirtle speculates that Auston Matthews may not wish to continue playing under Craig Berube’s leadership.

Regarding the San Jose Sharks, there’s speculation about their intentions with the second overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft. Analyst Frankie Corrado suggests that the Sharks might be open to trading this valuable draft position as part of a strategy to accelerate their team’s improvement.

Corrado believes the Sharks could be looking for a foundational player to add to their organization, potentially acquiring someone who fits their needs in exchange for the second overall pick. Blake Price and Matt Sekeres, discussing the Sharks’ needs, highlighted the desire for a proven, right-shot defenseman with remaining contract years, a predictable salary, and a tough, gritty, defensive mindset, who is also competent with the puck.

Corrado, however, suggested the Sharks might be aiming for a more significant acquisition than a player like Filip Hronek, hinting at a potentially larger caliber player in their considerations.
