Tom McKibbin Leads British Masters Amid Frequent Rain Delays

Tom McKibbin is in the lead at the Husqvarna British Masters, holding a one-shot advantage after the opening day at The Belfry was severely impacted by stormy weather and multiple play suspensions.

The first interruption of the day, due to lightning, occurred just two minutes after the initial tee shots at 7:30 am, leading to a three-hour delay.

Play recommenced at 10:32 am but was halted again shortly after midday because of flooded bunkers, causing another four-hour suspension on the course.

A final resumption at 4:15 pm allowed some early groups to make significant progress on their back nines before thunder and lightning forced the end of play for the day at 7:11 pm.

Crucially, none of the players on the course had finished their first rounds, with half of the 156-player field not even having teed off yet.

Northern Ireland's McKibbin had completed 13 holes and was five-under par, giving him a one-shot lead over England's Joe Dean and Spain's Nacho Elvira.

McKibbin, who started on the 10th hole, achieved birdies on the 15th, 17th, and 18th holes, adding further gains on the first and third holes.

This is McKibbin's first win on the DP World Tour, and he is participating in the tournament due to the cancellation of LIV Golf's Team Championship in Michigan.

The same applies to his Legion XIII teammate and fellow LIV golfer Tyrrell Hatton, who was scheduled to be among the afternoon starters on Thursday before the adverse weather intervened.

The British Masters also serves as the first qualifying event for the 2027 European Ryder Cup team, preceding next year's event at Adare Manor. Tournament captain Luke Donald is competing at The Belfry and was one-under through his 14 completed holes.

Following Thursday's stop-start play, the first round is scheduled to resume at 7:30 am on Friday. Groups yet to begin will tee off between 8 am and 10 am.

The second round will not commence before 1:45 pm.

Tournament director Ben Groutage commented, "We'll just see how far we can get tomorrow. We have some weather coming in again tomorrow afternoon. So, you know, we'll stay out there for as long as we can."
