Oliver Glasner's Plan for Stability and Success at Nottingham Forest
Oliver Glasner, while not typically known as a strict disciplinarian, is a highly meticulous and self-proclaimed workaholic coach. At Nottingham Forest, this approach might necessitate a shift towards more structured rules.
Glasner has earned a reputation as one of Europe's most tactically astute managers, a skill showcased throughout his career, particularly during his successful tenure at Eintracht Frankfurt where he led them to a Europa League triumph against considerable odds, attracting the attention of several Premier League clubs.
In 2024, Glasner was recruited by Crystal Palace with the aim of evolving their playing style. His spell there proved highly successful, culminating in the team winning three trophies during his two-year charge. Nottingham Forest's owner, Evangelos Marinakis, believes Glasner can replicate this success at the City Ground.
However, Glasner's immediate task is to establish fundamental rules following a period of significant instability at Nottingham Forest, which saw four managers appointed in the last 12 months. "There is great talent here," Glasner shared with Sky Sports from Forest's training facilities in West Bridgford, "But sometimes, we must consider that the atmosphere might be a little too relaxed. We truly need to find the balance between hard work on the pitch, giving our best, and uniting to reach our peak performance. We aim for the best version of every single player."
While pre-season offers a degree of leniency, Glasner emphasizes its importance as a foundation. "Players have shown great effort and spirit in sessions, which for me, is the foundation," he stated. Yet, a serious approach is also crucial.
Nottingham Forest's managerial turnover last season was high, but the team remarkably reached a Europa League semi-final, their first European competition in 30 years, after playing 56 games. Despite the considerable upheaval, this achievement stands out.
The focus now shifts to establishing a more consistent Premier League presence. Forest has adopted Glasner's preferred tactical system, and the squad is being reshaped to suit his needs. Center-back Ousmane Diomande is a key summer acquisition, and Glasner, a former defender himself, is actively seeking "one or two more" signings.
The 51-year-old's playing philosophy is built on a strong structure. His teams are well-drilled, competitive, and detail-oriented, often exceeding expectations through a smart combination of open play and set-piece effectiveness, without necessarily dominating possession.
Players have responded positively, with significant squad adjustments made during pre-season. Defender Nikola Milenkovic commented, "He is a bit of a perfectionist. He focuses on small details, which are sometimes what truly decide a game. Whether we play with a back four or three is up to the manager; we must be adaptable to any system he wants to implement and give our utmost effort on the pitch."
Glasner added, "The players have been very receptive. One of my initial messages was: 'If you only do the same, you will always get the same.' The players were open to this after a challenging season. No team wants to fight against relegation. We believe we can achieve better than 16th place, but we must be realistic. We are creating an environment, a path to improvement. We absolutely want individuals, characters, and egos, but not playing for themselves, rather playing for the team. This can be an amazing group."
Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, and Wolves experienced significant decreases in their final point totals between the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons. While Wolves are in a different division and all three clubs have new managers, Forest narrowly avoided relegation, a fate Glasner is determined to prevent recurring.
"Our number one priority is to bring stability to the club. Nobody desired so many changes last season, but it happened. We need stability for everyone. Only then can we discuss establishing ourselves in the top half of the table, but we must remain humble and proceed step-by-step."
"We have time to train and improve, and it is our responsibility to capitalize on that. In training, we must always focus on this, not just anticipating the next game on Saturday. I promise we will push the players to work exceptionally hard."
Key players, including Morgan Gibbs-White, have remained at the club despite interest from rival teams. Glasner's success is built on collective understanding rather than solely individual brilliance, but at Forest, he also benefits from players capable of individual moments of game-changing quality.
"The quality of the players," he admitted, along with "the ambition of Mr. Marinakis," was what initially attracted him to the club, even though Forest was "not on my radar" before this summer. This presents both excitement and a considerable challenge.
Forest fans might accept Premier League progression after their European exploits, but Marinakis is known for his impatience. Glasner highlighted that his ambition and "detailed approach" align with Forest's owner's vision, but he will need to present a clear strategy for success to solidify his long-term suitability.
Can this managerial dark horse, with a proven ability to overcome the odds, achieve success once more?
