Nunez's Halfway Line Stunner Secures Ipswich Victory Over Leicester in Carabao Cup

Marcelino Nunez delivered a sensational goal from the halfway line, propelling Ipswich to a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Leicester in the Carabao Cup. This encounter, a stark contrast to their Premier League fixture just 15 months prior, saw Leicester arrive at Portman Road after a disappointing league loss, with under-fire manager Russell Martin witnessing a goalless first half.

Sindre Walle Egeli showcased Premier League caliber for Gary O'Neil's side, breaking the deadlock with a precise left-footed finish in the 62nd minute. However, 19-year-old Olabade Aluko quickly earned Leicester a deserved equalizer just five minutes later.

Fittingly, it was ex-Norwich midfielder Nunez who had the final say in this clash between two former teammates at Carrow Road. Nunez unleashed a powerful shot that found the back of the net off the post in the 71st minute, marking his first goal at Portman Road since his summer transfer. He then added a remarkable 50-yard lob in stoppage time, securing Ipswich's place in the Carabao Cup third round for only the second time in 11 seasons.

Martin had faced boos following Leicester's defeat to Burton, and his team was nearly caught out within the first 33 seconds, though Chuba Akpom couldn't capitalize on the early opportunity.

Leicester, to their credit, settled into the game. Brighton loanee Tom Watson sent a shot wide before testing Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton with a well-placed effort.

Walton, deputizing in goal for Ipswich, thwarted Christian McFarlane's attempted chip in the 20th minute after a well-worked move. At the other end, Jakub Stolarczyk made a fine save to deny Dara O'Shea's header. Leicester finished the half strongly, with Conor Chaplin's curling shot being pushed wide by Walton.

Ipswich midfielder Kasey McAteer had a goal disallowed for offside two minutes after halftime. Chaplin was then substituted to a standing ovation in the 60th minute by Martin, only for the home side to break the deadlock moments later.

Akpom played a through ball to Jack Clarke, who then squared it for Egeli to tap home.

Five minutes later, Leicester drew level when Page's corner was flicked on by Bobby De Cordova-Reid, and 19-year-old Aluko made a slight touch to score his first professional goal.

Nunez ensured there would be no upset by firing in via the post after a defensive error by Woyo Coulibaly. After Akpom missed a one-on-one opportunity, the Chilean international sealed the victory with his second goal.

After the ball fell inside the center circle, Nunez spotted Stolarczyk off his line and executed an incredible lob over the Leicester goalkeeper, marking back-to-back wins for O'Neil's Ipswich side.
