Rory McIlroy a admis qu'il n'était toujours pas satisfait de son swing à l'approche du Tour Championship, malgré avoir manqué de peu la victoire au BMW Championship. McIlroy a décrit son jeu comme «très loin» de là où il devrait être après une semaine oubliable au FedEx St Jude Championship, où il a terminé 66e sur 68 joueurs, pour ensuite produire une performance beaucoup plus améliorée à St Louis.

Le numéro 2 mondial a réussi trois birdies lors de trois des quatre derniers trous de son troisième tour au Bellerive Country Club, se rapprochant à cinq coups du leader Wyndham Clark, préparant ainsi un duel du dimanche avec le champion de l'US Open, avant d'être à égalité avec l'Américain le dernier jour.

McIlroy est resté à égalité avec le leader jusqu'à trois trous de la fin, mais a finalement terminé à la troisième place, à quatre coups, tandis que Clark a réussi trois birdies dans les derniers trous pour remporter une victoire de trois coups et sa troisième victoire de la saison sur le PGA Tour.

«Je suis plus proche [de mon jeu] que je ne l'étais en début de semaine», a admis McIlroy. «Je ne suis toujours pas dans une position où je suis très satisfait de mon jeu ou de mon swing, donc je dois continuer à y travailler.»

«C'est bien de savoir que, même quand je ne suis pas très satisfait de tout, je peux quand même assembler les pièces, jouer et me donner une chance de gagner des tournois.»

McIlroy a capitalisé sur un écart de deux coups au premier trou et s'est remis de bogeys aux quatrième et septième trous pour réaliser trois birdies sur une série de quatre trous à partir du huitième, le ramenant à égalité après que Clark ait joué ses 10 premiers trous en trois au-dessus du par.

Clark a pris l'avantage avec un birdie de 15 pieds au 16ème trou et a creusé l'écart au par-cinq suivant, réussissant un birdie alors que McIlroy concédait un coup, avant de réussir un autre birdie au dernier trou pour étendre sa marge de victoire sur Patrick Cantlay.

«J'ai senti que la majeure partie de mon jeu a tenu le coup aujourd'hui», a ajouté McIlroy. «Évidemment, jouer dans le dernier groupe et travailler sur certaines choses, vous espérez simplement que tout reste tel quel.

«J'ai eu mes chances en deuxième neuf et j'ai joué beaucoup de bons putts qui ne sont pas rentrés. Wyndham Clark a été à la hauteur quand il le fallait. Son birdie au 16ème a été énorme et la façon dont il a joué les trois derniers trous, il a montré beaucoup de caractère.»

McIlroy a concédé: «J'ai essayé de la lancer un peu trop loin. J'aurais dû éviter ce bunker de gauche. Si vous allez jouer court, jouez court, donc encore une stupide décision avec un coup d'approche sur un par-cinq qui m'a coûté cher.»

Quant à savoir s'il sentait qu'il méritait la victoire, McIlroy a expliqué à CBS Sports: «Je ne peux pas être trop déçu. Je ne joue probablement pas assez bien pour être déçu de ne pas avoir gagné.

La saison du PGA Tour atteint son apogée lors du Tour Championship à East Lake GC, où seuls les 30 meilleurs joueurs au classement sont éligibles pour concourir pour la FedExCup et le premier prix de 10 millions de dollars.

McIlroy rues 'stupid decision' after PGA Tour near-miss to Clark

Rory McIlroy admitted he is still not happy with his swing heading into the season-ending Tour Championship, despite narrowly missing out on victory at the BMW Championship. McIlroy described his game as 'so far away' from where it needed to be after a forgettable week at the FedEx St Jude Championship, where he ended 66th in a 68-man field, only to produce a much-improved performance in St Louis.

The world No 2 birdied three of the last four holes of his third round at Bellerive Country Club to get within five strokes of leader Wyndham Clark, setting up a Sunday pairing with the US Open champion, before pulling level with the American on the final day.

McIlroy remained tied for the lead with three holes to play but eventually ended in third spot, four strokes back, as Clark produced a three-birdie finish to claim a three-shot victory and third PGA Tour win of the season.

'I'm closer [with his game] than I was at the start of the week,' McIlroy admitted. 'I'm still not in a spot where I'm super happy with where my game is or where my swing is, so I just have to keep working on it.

'It's nice to know, even when I'm not super happy with everything, I can still piece it together and get it around and still give myself a chance to win tournaments.'

McIlroy capitalised on a two-shot swing at the first hole and recovered from bogeys at the fourth and seventh to post three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the eighth, pulling him level after Clark played his first 10 holes in three over.

Clark edged ahead with a 15-foot birdie at the 16th and found his own two-shot swing at the par-five next, making birdie as McIlroy dropped a shot, before finding another at the last to extend his winning margin over Patrick Cantlay.

'I felt like most of my game held up today,' McIlroy added. 'Obviously, going out in the final group and you're working on some stuff, you're just hoping that everything stays the way it is.

'I had my chances on the back nine and hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in. Wyndham Clark stepped up when he needed too. His birdie on 16 was huge and the way he played the last three holes, he showed a lot of character.'

'I tried to get it up a bit too far,' McIlroy conceded. 'I should have been taking that left bunker out of play. If you're going to lay it up, lay it up, so just another stupid decision with a lay-up on a par-five that cost me.'

On whether he felt like he deserved the win, McIlroy explained to CBS Sports: 'I can't be too disappointed. I'm probably not playing well enough to be disappointed that I didn't win.

The PGA Tour season reaches its climax at the Tour Championship at East Lake GC, where only the top 30 players in the standings are eligible to compete for the FedExCup and $10m first prize.
