Leeds Secure Second Victory at Forest in Carabao Cup
Leeds United achieved their second victory at Nottingham Forest in a span of three days, successfully advancing to the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Following their Premier League triumph on Saturday, Daniel Farke's team secured a 2-0 win in the League Cup, with goals contributed by Dan James and James Justin.
Having not won at the City Ground since 1972 prior to the weekend's matches, Leeds have now emerged victorious there twice within a 72-hour period, marking a positive start to the new campaign for the Yorkshire club.
This result was not the desired start for new Forest manager Oliver Glasner, as the team is still finding its rhythm. However, reinforcements are anticipated with a reported £50 million deal agreed for Chelsea striker Liam Delap.
Neither team likely relished the prospect of a quick rematch so soon after their Premier League opener on Saturday.
Forest showed early promise when James Trafford was compelled to make a strong save in the 10th minute, parrying away Ola Aina's cross-shot that nearly caught him off guard.
Subsequently, Justin was well-positioned to block Igor Jesus' header from finding the net.
Leeds then mounted pressure and should have taken the lead midway through the first half. James made a run down the right flank, but his pull-back was slightly behind Sean Longstaff, whose shot was directly at Matz Sels.
Both sides were actively attacking. Leeds defender Joe Rodon thwarted Chris Wood with an excellent last-ditch tackle, while Sels denied James' low attempt at the other end.
The Wales international demonstrated the necessary composure five minutes after the interval.
A misplaced header from Aina allowed Longstaff to advance forward and set up James, who skillfully chipped the ball in.
Forest nearly responded immediately when Arnaud Kalimuendo's cutback found Wood perfectly, but Trafford made a superb save to prevent his shot from entering the bottom corner. Noah Okafor then sent an effort just wide as Leeds launched a rapid counter-attack.
Leeds sealed their victory with 15 minutes left to play, though the goal itself was not particularly elegant.
Lucas Nmecha attempted to claim the goal as his bundled effort was blocked on the line by Williams, before Justin eventually put the ball into the back of the net.
