Jannik Sinner Withdraws from US Open Due to Knee Injury
World number one Jannik Sinner has been forced to withdraw from this month's US Open, citing a right knee injury. This news comes after Sinner has been sidelined since his victory at Wimbledon last month, where he secured his fifth Grand Slam title by defeating Alexander Zverev.
The Italian tennis star had previously pulled out of the Masters 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati due to the same knee issue. He had been focusing on recovery to be fit for the New York tournament, but has now confirmed he will not be able to participate.
In a statement shared on social media, Sinner conveyed his deep regret: "Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year."
He elaborated on the decision, stating, "We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue."
Sinner expressed his emotional response, saying, "I'm obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."
Sinner's withdrawal occurs just a day after his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, announced his return to the US Open following a four-month layoff due to a wrist injury. Alcaraz, whom Sinner lost to in the US Open final 12 months prior, will be aiming for his third title at Flushing Meadows. His comeback and pursuit of a third US Open title will be broadcast live on Sky Sports starting August 30th.
