Iga Swiatek Advances to Cincinnati Open Semifinals After Rybakina's Injury
Elena Rybakina was compelled to withdraw from her quarter-final match against Iga Swiatek at the Cincinnati Open due to an ankle injury.
The second-ranked Rybakina was trailing 4-1 when she requested a medical timeout for her left ankle. Shortly thereafter, she retired from the contest.
With the top seed Aryna Sabalenka having been defeated by Sara Bejlek, Rybakina, aged 27, had the opportunity to ascend to the World No. 1 ranking by reaching the final. However, this injury has halted that possibility.
Swiatek, the reigning champion, has consistently reached at least the semi-final stage in her last four appearances in Cincinnati.
Reflecting on the match, Swiatek commented, "It's not the way you want the match to end. She clearly wasn't looking well. Then she sought treatment, and I wasn't sure if she would return or not."
"She's walking normally now. I felt really sorry for her, but hopefully, it's nothing serious and she'll be ready for the US Open."
Last year, Swiatek defeated Rybakina in the semi-finals in Cincinnati. This year, she is set to face American Jessica Pegula in the last four.
The World No. 3, Pegula, secured her place in the semifinals after a comeback victory against Amanda Anisimova, with a final score of 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4).
In the men's singles, the seventh seed Flavio Cobolli rallied from a slow start to defeat American Tommy Paul 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, advancing to his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. He will compete against Arthur Fils for a spot in the final, after Fils defeated Argentina's Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-3, 6-2.
