England Dominates Pakistan on Joe Root's Return as Test Captain
Joe Root's tenure as England Test captain commenced with a decisive victory, as the team bowled out Pakistan for a mere 171 runs at Headingley. This impressive performance was bolstered by exceptional bowling from Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue, who each secured five wickets, despite a significant interruption due to rain and a brief resurgence from the visiting side.
Root has reassumed the captaincy following Ben Stokes' unexpected international retirement in June. His mandate is to revitalize the team's fortunes, which have been marked by seven defeats and only one win in their last ten matches across series against India, Australia, and New Zealand.
Aside from a rain delay that halted play from 11:50 am to 1:45 pm, and a 91-run partnership between Abdullah Shafique (61) and Imam-ul-Haq (42) for the second wicket, the day was highly successful for Root. Pakistan was dismissed in 48.1 overs, and England concluded the day at 112 for 2, trailing by 59 runs.
England lost Ben Duckett (15) to an lbw decision and Emilio Gay (33) caught at slip, both to the bowling of Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali, respectively. This left Jordan Cox (23 not out), who moved to number three in place of the injured Jacob Bethell, and Root (37 not out) to guide the team to stumps at 7:30 pm with an unbroken 64-run partnership.
The day's play was extended due to the earlier rain, with the forecast indicating a possibility of more wet weather on day two.
Root, whose initial captaincy stint from 2017 to 2022 predated the flamboyant yet ultimately inconsistent "Bazball" era, did not hesitate to bowl after winning the toss under gloomy skies at his home ground. This decision quickly yielded positive results.
Robinson (5-51) claimed a wicket off the very first ball of the Test innings for England for the first time in 19 years, trapping opener Azan Awais lbw from around the wicket. He then dismissed Shan Masood (5) leg before wicket from over the wicket.
Pakistan reached 23 for 2 in 9.4 overs before the rain arrived. During this period, England unsuccessfully used two reviews. Once play resumed, they advanced to 97 for 3, but Tongue (5-46) then dismissed Imam to initiate a collapse.
Pakistan lost their last eight wickets for 74 runs, and the final five wickets for just 21. Among the fallen was Shafique, bowled by a masterful delivery from Robinson that moved sharply inwards. Robinson also pinned Saud Shakeel (5) lbw, after the batter was too slow to review a delivery that would have gone over the stumps.
Tongue's Hat-trick Hopes Dashed as Pakistan Collapses
Tongue was on a hat-trick as players returned after tea, having bowled stand-in Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha (21) through the gate and then trapping Ali Usman (0) lbw before the break. Pakistan's number nine, Khurram Shahzad (14), prevented Tongue from achieving a hat-trick with a powerful cover drive for four, but Tongue secured his fourth Test five-wicket haul by dismissing Mohammad Rizwan (12) lbw and shattering the off stump of Abbas (2).
Robinson's fifth five-wicket haul in the format, and second of the summer, could have been achieved two balls earlier, but Gus Atkinson dropped Khurram's miscued shot at mid-on. However, Atkinson made no mistake shortly after when Khurram again sliced the ball down the ground.
This is Robinson's first Test since the opening match against New Zealand at Lord's, where he took seven wickets and was named Player of the Match. He demonstrated immense accuracy and control in this match as well.
The same could not be said for Jofra Archer (0-26 from nine overs), who struggled with his line and length at times, conceding 12 runs in his fourth over. He appeared to be suffering from a lack of recent red-ball cricket. Archer, who was taken off after two overs having shared the new ball with Robinson, should benefit from the match practice.
Shafique had been in good form, scoring a fifty in the pre-series warm-up against a County Select XI and an unbeaten 160 in a Test win in the West Indies earlier this month. He appeared comfortable in red-ball cricket, even after an early testing spell from Tongue, compiling his sixth Test fifty from 82 deliveries before falling to Robinson's excellent delivery.
England opener Gay had a difficult outing in the County XI match against Pakistan, but he settled into his innings in Leeds with a second-ball single. He then struck several pleasing boundaries before prodding to slip.
England might face a lengthy wait before batting again due to a poor forecast for Thursday. However, whenever play resumes, it will be with England in a strong position. Pakistan's seamers Khurram and Ali struggled to match Abbas's precision, leaking runs, while Root is now ominously settled at the crease.
Tongue: England in a Great Position
England fast bowler Josh Tongue (5-46), speaking to Sky Sports, stated: "We're in a great position now, but that first hour tomorrow morning – it might do a bit more at 11 am. If we focus on that first hour, we can get a good lead. As a bowling unit, we were very good, and Robinson was excellent. It was similar to his performance at Lord's against New Zealand. He's an exceptional bowler when he hits his lines and lengths, and he showed that today."
