Derby and Cardiff Share Spoils in Entertaining Championship Draw

Cardiff City remains undefeated two games into their return to Championship football after goals from Cian Ashford and Yousef Salech secured a 2-2 draw against Derby County.

The Welsh side delivered a performance worthy of their point, having taken the lead twice in front of a boisterous 28,926 crowd at Pride Park.

However, Derby, who showed inconsistency for much of the game, capitalized on defensive errors to claim their first point of the new season through goals from Carlton Morris and Bobby Clark.

Due to a significant number of injuries, Brian Barry-Murphy's team started with an improvised central defensive pairing of Perry Ng and Joel Bagan and had to weather early pressure from the home team.

Within the first three minutes, Ng made a crucial, perfectly timed tackle to deny Clark, and goalkeeper Nathan Trott was also tested on two occasions.

Initially, the former West Ham reserve pushed away a curling shot from Corey Blackett-Taylor. He then managed to smother a shot from Oscar Fraulo after a misplaced back-pass from Ronan Kpakio, with Bagan clearing Clark's follow-up effort off the line.

Despite the early pressure, Cardiff eventually settled into the game. Jacob Widdell Zetterstrom's first significant save came when he tipped a powerful 15-yard drive from Rubin Colwill onto the crossbar.

Following this, Trott saved a shot from Blackett-Taylor with his right leg at the near post, and Lewis Travis shot wide. The visitors then took the lead in the 19th minute.

Kpakio headed Alex Robertson's left-wing corner back towards goal, and Ashford guided the ball into Zetterstrom's bottom-right corner from eight yards out, marking his second goal since December.

Derby equalized in the 26th minute when Max Johnston's long diagonal pass from the right found Morris. He shrugged off Ng's challenge and bundled the ball past an exposed Trott into the bottom-right corner.

Cardiff regained the lead before halftime, with Ollie Tanner and Colwill combining effectively down the right flank. Colwill then squared the ball for Salech to sweep past Zetterstrom. This was the Danish striker's third goal of the season across all competitions.

John Eustace's side leveled the score just four minutes into the second half. Blackett-Taylor, who had caused problems for right-back Kpakio on multiple occasions, pulled the ball back from the byline to find Clark, who fired a firm 12-yard shot past Trott.

Just after the hour mark, Morris headed wide from an Alex Mowatt corner. At the other end, speculative long-range efforts from David Turnbull and Jack Moylan failed to hit the target.

In stoppage time, a misplaced pass from Kpakio gifted possession to substitute Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, who fired straight at Trott, ensuring the points were shared.
