Coco Gauff's Dominant Cincinnati Title Run Signals US Open Threat

Coco Gauff has clinched her second Cincinnati Open women's singles championship, defeating fellow American Jessica Pegula in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

This victory positions the world No. 4 as one of only three players in the Open Era, alongside Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, to have won multiple titles in Cincinnati.

The final featured an all-American matchup, the first in Cincinnati in 56 years. Pegula had advanced by defeating the defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, while Gauff overcame the unseeded Sara Bejlek, who had previously upset world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Gauff established an early lead in the first set, going up 5-0 before securing it 6-2. Despite Pegula's comeback attempt in the second set to reach 5-4, Gauff converted five of her six break points throughout the match to seal the win.

"I think it was a long journey, but I'm happy," Gauff stated. "I think it's night and day, the player I was last year to now. I don't think that this is an indicator that I'm going to do well in New York [at the US Open]. Just knowing the quality wins that I had this week, hopefully I can use that experience."

Gauff achieved five straight-set victories during her campaign in Cincinnati.

Pegula acknowledged Gauff's high level of play, commenting, "I thought she just played at a really high level and didn't really have many dips. I didn't really think I played bad. The more you construct the point [against her], the worse it is because she almost likes to run. It was tough today. A dangerous, confident Coco is going to New York."

The head-to-head record between Gauff and Pegula is now even at five wins each. This was their second final meeting, with Gauff also winning at Wuhan last year.
