Chelsea Considering Late Move for Aston Villa's Emi Martinez

Chelsea are reportedly exploring the possibility of a late transfer swoop for Aston Villa's goalkeeper, Emi Martinez. Representatives for the Argentina international have offered the player to Chelsea.

This interest comes in the wake of criticism directed at Chelsea's current first-choice goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, after an error in their recent victory against Fulham.

Martinez is reportedly seeking a new club following Aston Villa's acquisition of Zion Suzuki from Parma for a substantial fee. While Juventus had previously shown interest in the World Cup-winning goalkeeper, they ultimately signed Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham.

Paul Merson, a Sky Sports pundit, believes that Martinez is among the world's elite goalkeepers and essential for any team aspiring to be among the best. He highlighted that while Martinez can sometimes present a challenging persona, his goalkeeping abilities are undeniable.

Merson noted that Robert Sanchez is generally a capable shot-stopper and could produce outstanding performances. However, he pointed out that Sanchez's performance against Fulham, where a costly error allowed Fulham back into the game, was not an isolated incident. Merson argued that winning major titles requires a top-tier goalkeeper, contrasting Sanchez's frequent mistakes with the infrequent errors made by goalkeepers like David Raya.

Merson elaborated on Sanchez's recurring issues, citing a specific instance where a poor throw-out led to an opposition chance.
