Japan's July Exports Exceed Forecasts, Driven by Robust Chip Shipments

August 20, 2026Diego Herrera1 мин

Japan's export growth accelerated for a fifth consecutive month in July, reaching 23.2%, surpassing the 19.9% predicted by economists. This strong performance was largely powered by a significant increase in semiconductor equipment shipments, which saw a 49.1% jump in value, reflecting sustained demand amplified by the artificial intelligence boom.

Key trading partners also contributed to this positive trend. Exports to China, Japan's largest trading partner, increased by 25.8%, while shipments to the United States rose by 22%.

The robust export performance has been crucial in bolstering Japan's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). While the economy grew by 0.7% year-on-year in the second quarter, a slight improvement from the 0.5% in the first quarter, the GDP figures on a quarter-on-quarter and annualized basis missed expectations. Nevertheless, the export sector emerged as the primary driver of economic growth, mitigating the impact of these slower-than-anticipated figures.

Imports also saw a notable rise, climbing 27.8% in July, marking the highest increase since November 2022 and exceeding the 26.5% forecast. This surge was partly due to an 87.8% increase in the value of petroleum imports, attributed to rising oil prices and global geopolitical events.
