Doug Coltrane Returns to Challenge UFC Narrative Against Maki Pitolo at BKFC Honolulu

Doug Coltrane is poised for his highly anticipated return to the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) ring, where he will face UFC veteran Maki Pitolo in the main event of BKFC Honolulu on April 11th. After a considerable period away from combat sports, Coltrane expresses renewed vigor and readiness.

Coltrane’s Preparedness After Extended Hiatus

Reflecting on his journey back, Coltrane shared insights into his path to optimal physical and mental condition. "Last year, I had a chance to fight in January but couldn't take it due to personal matters," he admitted. "Since then, I’ve reorganized my life and dedicated myself to intense, consistent training. When the call came for this fight, I was already prepared – I felt ready to step into the ring immediately."

An Unexpected Path to the Main Event

Coltrane’s journey to headlining the Honolulu card was an unforeseen turn of events. He initially agreed to a fight against a top-five contender in Denver, which ultimately fell through. "For some reason, that opportunity didn't materialize on the other end," Coltrane explained. "Subsequently, I was connected with the promoters for the Hawaii card, and to my surprise, it became the main event. When Maki Pitolo's name was first presented, I wasn't familiar with him, but that's certainly changed now."

He views the unexpected matchup as a compelling story. "It’s a perfectly aligned scenario: you have me, the BKFC veteran, against a UFC veteran. Both of us are coming off layoffs and a couple of losses. Everything simply fell into place to create what I believe is an outstanding main event. I have to give a huge shout-out to Nate Shook and all the matchmakers for assembling such a significant fight."

Aiming to Make a Statement Against a UFC Veteran

Coltrane acknowledges the unique challenge and opportunity presented by facing a fighter with Pitolo's background. "Maki Pitolo is clearly an experienced MMA veteran who had his moment in the UFC and is now looking to establish himself in BKFC," Coltrane observed. "He's stepping into my domain, and I get the chance to represent BKFC and officially welcome him."

Coltrane understands that a victory over him could significantly elevate Pitolo’s BKFC standing, particularly given Pitolo's UFC pedigree, which often accelerates a fighter's ascent in new promotions. "He’s aiming to build his reputation off my name," Coltrane stated, "but I'm equally determined to make my name off him and demonstrate to everyone that for former UFC fighters, this is a fundamentally different world. This isn't the UFC, it's not MMA, and it’s not traditional boxing."

Coltrane is eager to powerfully convey this message on April 11th. "I’m excited to prove to everyone that the UFC is simply a business. When I defeat him, people will truly understand that bare-knuckle fighting is a distinct sport altogether."
