Mark Henry: Pro Wrestling Can Evolve Without Vince McMahon

Sports news » Mark Henry: Pro Wrestling Can Evolve Without Vince McMahon

Mark Henry, a WWE Hall of Famer, expressed his belief that professional wrestling is poised for significant growth and evolution now that Vince McMahon has stepped away from his leadership role. While acknowledging that changes won’t happen overnight, Henry sees this as a crucial opportunity for the industry to pursue expansion and reach new heights that might have been constrained under McMahon’s previous direction.

Henry’s Vision for Wrestling’s Evolution

In a recent interview, Henry discussed the current state of professional wrestling and its future trajectory. He clarified that McMahon’s absence doesn’t signal a chaotic upheaval but rather the removal of potential obstacles to expansion plans that were previously put on hold. Henry shared his vision, stating, “I want wrestling to evolve. And when I say that, I mean I want us to go to Saudi Arabia, Africa, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Russia when everything is better. I want us to go places and have pro wrestling be a representative of what entertainment should look like.”

Henry’s vision extends beyond geographical expansion. He drew a parallel between wrestling and the broader entertainment landscape, noting how wrestling-inspired moves are now common in mainstream films and television. He emphasized the need for the wrestling community to receive recognition for popularizing these techniques. “You look at every movie you watch, people are doing wrestling moves; it’s awesome. When you do it, shout it out. Give credence to what wrestling is,” he remarked.

To ensure wrestling’s continued relevance and legitimacy across various entertainment platforms, Henry believes the industry must actively build upon its foundation. This commitment to growth led him to launch Caribbean Wrestling, an international promotion focused on global reach. He candidly admitted that he’s largely navigating this space independently, aiming for a worldwide presence rather than focusing on a single territory.

Strategic Growth and Professionalism

On an organizational level, Henry views the current period as ideal for implementing more structured oversight and strategic thinking within wrestling. With major events like SummerSlam expanding to two nights starting in 2026, and WrestleMania already a two-night spectacle, the industry has more space for talent and storyline development. However, Henry stressed that such expansion is only effective with a guiding framework for decision-making.

“It’s better now, from the standpoint of the professionalism that you stand for. It’s really good from the standpoint of ‘What’s next in pro wrestling?’ Like, how do we make pro wrestling better for SummerSlam? How do we make it better for WrestleMania next year? ‘This happened, this happened, and this happened, we don’t want that again. But this, this, and this was good. Let’s do more of that,'” Henry explained.

He described a need for a system where wrestling leadership analyzes successful elements, discards ineffective ones, and bases future strategies on these lessons. Henry concluded by stating, “That’s what wrestling needs. It needs checks and balances. It needs somebody that’s really smart, with an understanding of what you’re seeing, to break it all down and make it easy for people to consume.”
