Reigning UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has voiced strong criticism regarding Arman Tsarukyan. Topuria is scheduled to face interim champion Justin Gaethje in a title unification bout at UFC 250 on June 14, headlining the event at the White House in Washington, D.C.
Topuria, known as “El Matador,” claimed the 155-pound title by knocking out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317. While many anticipated Tsarukyan would be the next contender, the UFC introduced an interim title at UFC 324 during Topuria’s absence, with Gaethje defeating Paddy Pimblett to earn his shot.
Tsarukyan, also referred to as “Ahalkalakets,” has remained active outside the Octagon, participating in grappling and wrestling events while awaiting his championship opportunity. He has also engaged in verbal sparring with Topuria through social media and interviews.
Ilia Topuria Criticizes Arman Tsarukyan Amidst Escalating Rivalry
During a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Ilia Topuria shared his assessment of Arman Tsarukyan and his activities outside the UFC. Topuria delivered a harsh critique, stating that while he respects Tsarukyan’s skills in the cage, he finds Tsarukyan’s recent behavior and social media image difficult to respect.
“I’m really impressed with how dumb he is,” Topuria stated. “He’s like a child. His mentality is childish. He’s incredibly unintelligent. Everything I’ve seen about him online is embarrassing. Who cares about Arman? What I don’t like is when they pretend to be rich and flaunt their money. Dude, you’re not even rich… The only thing you have is money, and you’re spending your father’s money, not even your own. You know what I mean. He’s a kid.”
Ilia Topuria has not fought since his victory over Charles Oliveira. The undefeated 29-year-old Georgian-Spaniard holds a professional record of 17-0, including a 9-0 streak in the UFC, with notable wins against Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Bryce Mitchell.
Arman Tsarukyan was last seen in the Octagon at UFC Qatar in November, where he secured a second-round submission win over Dan Hooker, extending his win streak to five. Tsarukyan has a professional record of 23-3, with a 10-2 record in the UFC, including victories over Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush.
