Sports news » Cardiff Devils Crowned Elite League Champions for Fourth Time, Defeat Sheffield Steelers

The Cardiff Devils have clinched their fourth Elite League playoff championship, triumphing over the Sheffield Steelers with a 5-2 victory in the final. Nolan Yaremko was instrumental in the win, scoring two goals, while goaltender Christian Stoever made 23 crucial saves.

Cardiff took an early lead just three minutes into the game. Kohen Olischefski played a key role in the opening goal, drawing a double-minor penalty for the Steelers after a high stick from Mitchell Heard. Despite a Steelers’ appeal for a penalty, play continued until Olischefski found the back of the net, beating Matthew Greenfield on his blocker side.

The Steelers managed to withstand further pressure in the first period, but the Devils established a strong physical and offensive presence. Sheffield fought back after the first intermission, equalizing four minutes into the second period through Kevin Tansey. The Steelers dominated much of the second period, but Stoever made several key saves to keep the Devils in the game. Late in the period, Nolan Yaremko scored a quick-fire brace, giving Cardiff a 3-1 advantage heading into the final break.

In the third period, Ryan Tait pulled the Steelers closer, scoring through a screen with six minutes remaining. However, Josh MacDonald and Olischefski sealed the victory with empty-net goals, securing the playoff title for Cardiff.

Despite a challenging second period, the Cardiff Devils are deserving playoff champions. Their postseason run was expertly managed by Coach Thompson, with victories over the Coventry Blaze and Glasgow Clan en route to the final.

Cardiff controlled the first period, capitalizing on the powerplay and limiting Sheffield’s offensive zone time. However, they faced intense pressure after the break. Stoever’s performance was vital, making important saves to maintain the tie before Yaremko’s decisive goals.

The depth of the Cardiff squad proved to be a significant factor. Coach Thompson had the advantage of four full forward lines, while Sheffield’s Coach Fox had limited healthy centers. Samuel Tremblay, despite playing through a knee injury, showed resilience but lacked his usual dynamism.

This defeat adds another “what if” to Coach Fox’s tenure with the Steelers. While the team possessed talent, they struggled to match the Belfast Giants in the regular season and ultimately ran out of steam in the playoff final.

For Cardiff, it’s a triumphant first season under Coach Thompson, with the added prospect of competing in the IIHF Continental Cup in 2027.
