Sports news ยป Alexander Volkanovski: Next Fight Expected Between August and September, Eying Movsar Evloev

Reigning two-time UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has outlined his plans for his next Octagon appearance, including a potential timeframe and his preferred opponent.

Following his latest decisive victory over Diego Lopes in their rematch at UFC 325, Volkanovski, who recently inked a new contract, has no immediate plans for retirement.

“The Great” is focused on facing credible and deserving contenders. His sights are firmly set on undefeated Movsar Evloev, the current number one contender who boasts an impressive ten-fight win streak in the UFC. Evloev recently extended his undefeated record by defeating Lerone Murphy at UFC London, making a strong case for a title shot.

Volkanovski Discusses Potential Return Date and Opponent

In a recent interview with Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie, Alexander Volkanovski acknowledged the UFC’s upcoming major events, UFC Freedom 250 and UFC 329. He indicated that once these events conclude, he anticipates his next title defense will be formally announced.

“Obviously, I want something announced โ€“ not even announced, I want it locked in, as well. But you’ve got to understand they have a schedule they need to keep with a lot of champions, a lot of other people fighting, a lot of bigger events, with this one and obviously Conor [McGregor] fighting [at UFC 329]. Maybe once they get this out of the way, they can start putting energy everywhere else,” Volkanovski stated.

Volkanovski is aiming for a return to fighting sometime between August and September, with UFC 331 being a potential event for his next title defense.

“I was obviously looking for anywhere from August to September. September is being brought up a lot with everyone. There are dates that look good. Whatever works, we’ll see,” he added.

After his rematch with Diego Lopes, Volkanovski emphasized his commitment as champion to ensuring that only deserving contenders receive title shots, rejecting the idea of fast-tracking opponents. He reiterated his eagerness to face Movsar Evloev, considering him the rightful next challenger for the featherweight belt.

“You’ve always got to be ready for a curveball. It’s a crazy sport. That’s why everyone loves it. But at the same time, obviously Movsar is the most deserving No. 1 contender. He’s been No. 1 contender for a while, and everyone knows me as champion. I want to fight the No. 1 guy. I want to fight the guy who deserves it, and it is Movsar. That’s what I’m pushing for, and I’m pretty sure that’s what the UFC wants anyway, so I think that’s exactly what’s going to happen.”
