Max Verstappen secured pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, overcoming McLaren rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in an exciting qualifying session.
The fight for pole in the final moments seemed to be between the top three and the two Ferraris. However, Verstappen maintained composure and posted the fastest lap of 1:24.892s, capitalizing while his competitors struggled with the challenging wind conditions.
Championship leader Piastri, who briefly held provisional pole after the initial Q3 laps, finished a little over a tenth behind Verstappen in second place. His teammate and closest title rival, Norris, was incredibly close, only 0.015s further back in third.
George Russell of Mercedes seemed out of contention throughout the session as the team struggled, but he delivered a stunning final lap to secure fourth place, just 0.137s off pole.
Ferrari, after showing strong pace in practice, ended up on the third row, with Lewis Hamilton finishing fifth ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc.

Verstappen`s pursuit of a fifth consecutive drivers` championship faced a setback with a first-lap retirement in the previous Austrian Grand Prix, leaving him 61 points adrift of Piastri. This was followed by intense speculation about a potential move to Mercedes next season.
Despite the distractions, Verstappen demonstrated his focus, reminding everyone that he is ready to capitalize on any mistakes from McLaren, even if a strong title challenge this year seems distant.
Verstappen commented, “It was difficult out there due to the wind, which was changing direction slightly. These cars are very sensitive to it.”
He added, “That last lap was sufficient. This is a true racing circuit where you have to push to the limit. It requires real commitment and is very enjoyable.”
“I`m pleased with qualifying,” he concluded. “It`s a significant boost for the team, and I`m looking forward to racing tomorrow.”
While Piastri was disappointed not to improve on his final run, he could be satisfied with qualifying ahead of Norris, which helps his effort to extend his 15-point championship lead.
Piastri stated, “My first lap felt fantastic. I tried to figure out how to be faster but couldn`t.”
“The final lap was a bit untidy,” he added, “but it`s been incredibly close throughout the weekend. There was a little more pace possible.”
Ferrari`s strong performance in practice suggested they might challenge for their first pole of the season, but they unexpectedly struggled early, with Hamilton narrowly avoiding elimination in Q1 before finding more pace late in Q2.
Hamilton has often found it difficult to match Leclerc`s speed in his first season with Ferrari, but at Silverstone, where he holds a record nine victories, he appeared to be Ferrari`s strongest contender for pole position.
On his last Q3 lap, he was faster than Piastri`s provisional pole time through the first two sectors but lost time in the final section, missing out on what would have been his first front-row start for Ferrari.
Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh for Mercedes but will start 10th due to a three-place grid penalty incurred for colliding with Verstappen in Austria.
Oliver Bearman achieved a commendable eighth place for Haas but faces a 10-place grid penalty, meaning he starts 18th. This penalty was for a strange incident in final practice where he accelerated under red flags before crashing on his way into the pit lane.
Fernando Alonso secured ninth place, benefiting from Aston Martin`s car upgrades, while Pierre Gasly impressed by putting his Alpine car into the top 10.
The position of Gasly`s teammate, Franco Colapinto, appears more precarious after he spun into the gravel during Q1 and then stopped on track shortly after, resulting in him starting from the rear of the grid.
Despite Verstappen`s performance, his Red Bull teammate Yuki Tsunoda continued to struggle, finishing 12th.
