UFC Legend: Conor McGregor’s Retirement Was Foreseen Years Ago

Sports news » UFC Legend: Conor McGregor’s Retirement Was Foreseen Years Ago

Conor McGregor`s time in the UFC might be over, and it`s not entirely unexpected.

The former UFC Champion was scheduled to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 303, but withdrew due to an injury, leading to the cancellation of the highly anticipated match.

The fight hasn`t been rescheduled, and Chael Sonnen doubts McGregor`s given reason for pulling out.

With McGregor`s rumored political aspirations, it seems possible his fighting career is finished, and fans may not see him in the octagon again.

There`s always intrigue around the Irish fighter, but one UFC legend isn`t surprised by his potential retirement.

Matt Brown Unsurprised by Conor McGregor`s Potential UFC Retirement

While many might be surprised by McGregor possibly retiring, UFC legend Matt Brown is not.

Brown reminds fans that McGregor had previously indicated his plan to make money and leave the sport.

Speaking on “Fighter vs. Writer,” Brown recalled McGregor`s past statements:

“He told us about 10 years ago what he was going to do. Remember him saying, `I’m going to come in, I’m going to take over, I’m going to make money and then I’m going to get out`?”

“He mentioned that this sport is brutal and not to stay in it for too long. He said this around 8 or 10 years ago. He literally told us, and he’s doing it.”

“This isn’t surprising at all. He enjoys being in the news and staying relevant by sharing his opinions. He`s kept himself in the spotlight, and we’ve all paid attention and are still discussing it.”

“He’s done a good job of managing the media. I`ve said before, I think he’s done. He’s just confirming what we already suspected.”

McGregor`s planned return was at UFC 303, but he hasn`t fought in the Octagon since losing twice to Dustin Poirier in 2021.

Political Ambitions May Not Mean End of Fighting Career

Despite withdrawing from the fight and hinting at a political career, McGregor still wants to fight in the UFC.

The former UFC Champion has expressed interest in running for President of Ireland and has been seen with Donald Trump, increasing his political activity.

He has stated his ambition to be President while still fighting in the Octagon, a feat never achieved by any fighter.

“And now entering the octagon: The Notorious, the President of Ireland, Conor McGregor! Of course. Are you crazy?”

“That’s partly why I want to do it. To be announced as the President of Ireland, having a fight.”

The next Irish Presidential election is in November 2025, leaving McGregor limited time to build support for his campaign.
