The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced the commencement of an investigation into four Real Madrid players. The probe concerns allegations of `indecent conduct` during their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on March 12th.
UEFA stated that an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will examine the actions of Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Daniel Ceballos Fernandez, and Vinicius Junior. The investigation stems from events during the Champions League Round of 16 game between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid on March 12, 2025.
While UEFA has not detailed the specific incidents under scrutiny, reports suggest the investigation is focused on the Real Madrid players` behavior during their post-match celebrations, according to The Athletic. The players were seen dancing in front of their supporters, which was visible to Atletico fans who subsequently threw objects. It is alleged that all four players made gestures towards the Atletico supporters as they were leaving the field. Rudiger is accused of making a throat-slitting gesture, while Ceballos and Mbappe may have made inappropriate gestures to the crowd. Vinicius is also reported to have made a hand gesture.
The potential penalties are currently unclear. However, football regulations stipulate that `offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s)` or `acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way` could warrant a red card. Any sanctions imposed on the players could affect their participation in the first leg of the quarterfinal match against Arsenal on April 8th.
This news adds further intrigue to the already dramatic Madrid derby match earlier this month. The game, which ultimately went to penalties, saw Real Madrid progress to the next stage of the competition. Real Madrid entered the second leg with a 2-1 advantage, but Atletico Madrid quickly equalized the aggregate score with a goal from Conor Gallagher. Vinicius later had an opportunity to put Real Madrid ahead with a penalty in the second half, but his shot went over the bar, leading to extra time and then a penalty shootout.
Real Madrid ultimately won the penalty shootout 4-2. Alvarez`s penalty was disallowed because referees determined he made two touches on the ball. Rudiger subsequently scored the decisive penalty for Real Madrid.
