UEFA Decision Bumps Crystal Palace From Europa League Over Multi-Club Ownership Rules

Sports news » UEFA Decision Bumps Crystal Palace From Europa League Over Multi-Club Ownership Rules

Crystal Palace Football Club`s qualification for the upcoming European football season has been complicated by a recent ruling from UEFA. The club, which had secured a spot in the Europa League, has been demoted to the less prestigious Conference League due to alleged breaches of the governing body`s multi-club ownership regulations.

The crux of the issue centers on American businessman John Textor, whose company, Eagle Football, holds significant stakes in both Crystal Palace and French side Olympique Lyonnais. UEFA regulations stipulate that two clubs under the same controlling entity cannot participate in the same European competition. With both Palace and Lyon qualifying for the Europa League next season, UEFA`s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) was tasked with making a decision.

The situation was precipitated by Lyon successfully appealing against a potential relegation from Ligue 1, which ensured their qualification for the Europa League based on their league position. Had Lyon`s relegation stood, they would not have featured in European competition, potentially sidestepping this conflict for the current season.

Crystal Palace`s argument hinged on the assertion that John Textor did not wield “significant influence” at their club, distinct from his role at Lyon. However, UEFA`s panel concluded otherwise, finding that the level of common ownership via Eagle Football was sufficient to violate the rules.

Adding another layer to the situation is the fact that Textor is reportedly in the process of selling his stake in Crystal Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. However, this potential sale has not yet received formal approval from the Premier League, leaving the ownership structure effectively unchanged in the eyes of UEFA`s deadline.

Furthermore, Crystal Palace had missed UEFA`s March 1 deadline to demonstrate proof of restructuring their ownership to comply with multi-club rules. The club might argue, perhaps with a touch of unintended irony given their spectacular late-season form under Oliver Glasner, that European qualification seemed highly improbable back in March when they sat 12th in the league and were merely navigating the early rounds of the FA Cup.

As a direct consequence of this ruling, Crystal Palace`s place in the Europa League is now expected to be taken by Nottingham Forest. Forest, having finished seventh in the Premier League, were initially slated for a place in the Conference League.

While the CFCB`s first chamber has delivered its verdict, Crystal Palace is widely expected to appeal the decision. This move would seek to reverse the demotion and reinstate their qualification for the Europa League, potentially pushing Nottingham Forest back to the Conference League.

The case highlights the complexities and challenges football clubs face in navigating the evolving landscape of multi-club ownership models and the stringent regulations implemented by governing bodies like UEFA to maintain competitive integrity.
