Oscar Piastri secured pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, finishing ahead of his teammate Lando Norris and giving McLaren a dominant front-row lockout.
Piastri, who currently leads Norris by three points in the championship standings, was trailing after the initial laps in the final qualifying segment. However, a superb final run allowed him to clinch his fourth pole of the season with a time of 1:11.546.
Norris couldn`t quite replicate the form that led to his pole position and win in Monaco last weekend. A slightly untidy final attempt left him two tenths of a second behind Piastri.
Max Verstappen and George Russell were just under a tenth of a second behind Norris, securing third and fourth place respectively. They set identical lap times, but Verstappen took the higher grid slot by setting his time first.
Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth for Ferrari, outpacing his teammate Charles Leclerc, who finished seventh behind Mercedes` Kimi Antonelli. This was only the second time Hamilton has out-qualified Leclerc in nine qualifying sessions this season.
McLaren`s impressive performance contradicted earlier speculation that a new technical directive in Barcelona, aimed at limiting front wing flexibility, would hinder the team. Instead, their strong showing this weekend, possibly their best start to a Grand Prix weekend this season, fuels anticipation of a potential championship battle unfolding between the two McLaren drivers.
Pierre Gasly achieved a commendable eighth place for Alpine. Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar continued his excellent form, qualifying ninth ahead of Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin.
Red Bull`s difficulties with their second car persisted, with Yuki Tsunoda qualifying last and failing to advance to Q3 for the third consecutive race.

Piastri Strikes in Intensifying Title Race
Following McLaren`s dominant practice sessions on Friday, which highlighted the potential battle between Piastri and Norris, Saturday`s qualifying built towards a thrilling Q3 showdown.
Despite being outperformed by Piastri in the final practice session, Norris recovered his pace by the time Q3 commenced.
Norris briefly gained from a slipstream off Piastri at the start of his first Q3 flying lap. Piastri moved aside and slowed down quickly once he realized his teammate was completing his lap directly behind him.
Norris recorded a significantly stronger first sector, placing him 0.017 seconds ahead of Piastri after the initial runs. The remaining drivers in Q3 were left to compete for third place.
Norris was the first out for the final attempts but struggled with accuracy throughout his lap. Piastri, running behind him, executed a perfect lap to secure pole by the largest margin between first and second in any qualifying session this season.
Norris commented, “Oscar drove very well. The pace is definitely there, just a couple of little mistakes.”
Piastri has defied pre-season expectations, which often positioned Norris as McLaren`s main championship contender. The Australian continues to show a remarkable improvement in form compared to last season.
Out-qualifying Norris on Saturday gives Piastri a 5-4 advantage in their head-to-head qualifying battles this season. This achievement also means he has already exceeded the four times he qualified ahead of Norris throughout the entirety of their previous campaign.
Piastri, who had a difficult time in Barcelona last year, expressed his satisfaction: “Very happy. It`s been a good weekend so far. It didn`t start perfectly; we were struggling a bit. But last night we found some pace, and today the car was amazing. I feel I was able to put in some strong laps as well.”
He added, “This was quite a tough circuit for me 12 months ago, so to turn it around like this is a fantastic result.”
The forecast for Sunday predicts continued high temperatures in Barcelona, which will make tire management a significant challenge for both McLaren drivers. However, Piastri has successfully regained momentum following Norris`s victory in Monaco.
Hamilton `Happy` Behind Verstappen, Russell
As has frequently been the case this season, Verstappen and Russell were the closest rivals to the McLarens. However, even these skilled drivers couldn`t prevent McLaren from claiming the top two grid positions on this occasion.
Verstappen, who trails Piastri by 25 points in the standings, remains the primary threat to McLaren in the Drivers` Championship. His victory in Imola, the first race of this triple-header, demonstrated his ability to capitalize on any opportunity, particularly on the opening lap.
Verstappen commented: “We were lacking pace compared to them [McLaren] throughout the weekend. We executed our plan well. Third place is more or less where we expected to be. It`s enjoyable here; it`s all about getting the absolute maximum from the car.”
He added, “I will try my best in the race, but they [McLaren] will be difficult to beat.”
Mercedes cars have typically shown a decrease in performance from qualifying to the race, which might make Russell vulnerable to Lewis Hamilton`s Ferrari behind him.
Russell told Sky Sports F1, “We know the car is fast on Saturday. We are working hard to ensure it`s also fast on Sunday.”
He noted, “Based on what we`ve seen so far, the race will be challenging, similar to Bahrain, with significant tire overheating likely and a two-stop strategy expected. We saw how dominant McLaren were there.”
Hamilton has had a somewhat disappointing start to his first season with Ferrari after his high-profile move from Mercedes. However, his fifth place starting position for Sunday`s race equals his best qualifying result of the season.
The seven-time world champion appeared frustrated on Friday, describing the SF-25 as “undriveable”. However, he was much more optimistic after qualifying, having outperformed his teammate for only the second time in the last 15 races (dating back to last season).
Hamilton told Sky Sports F1, “We fixed the issues for today, and the car was much more drivable and enjoyable.”
He added, “We clearly made an improvement in qualifying to reach Q3 and secure a top-five spot. I`m very happy with that.”
