Scottie Scheffler to Headline PGA Tour’s Return to Miami

The PGA Tour makes its much-anticipated return to Miami this week with the inaugural Cadillac Championship. The event features a select field of 72 elite golfers from the past two seasons, vying for a substantial $20 million prize purse.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is set to compete, alongside the reigning Tour Championship victor Tommy Fleetwood and Adam Scott, who claimed victory at this venue a decade ago – the last time the PGA Tour held an event in Doral. They will be joined by a host of other prominent golfers, including major champions Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry, and Justin Rose.

Notably absent from the lineup are Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre, Ludvig Aberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick, all of whom are ranked within the top 15 of the Official World Golf Rankings.

This marks the 56th occasion the PGA Tour has played at this location. It also signifies the second consecutive Signature Event that McIlroy will skip, following his decision to bypass the RBC Heritage the week after his second career Masters Tournament victory.

While many professional golfers are accustomed to playing three weeks consecutively, it appears some of the top players have opted to take a break rather than participate in what is considered a major event. This voluntary break is understandable given the tournament’s timing. The Cadillac Championship precedes another elevated event, the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow, which is immediately followed by the PGA Championship at Aronimink.

The historic Doral Golf Resort & Spa, originally opened during the presidency of John F. Kennedy, hosted PGA Tour events for 45 consecutive years, from 1962 to 2006. Following the introduction of the FedEx Cup, the Blue Monster Course continued to host a World Golf Championship event until 2016.

Four years prior to the WGC event’s conclusion, the Trump Organization acquired the famed facility out of bankruptcy for $150 million. The property was subsequently renamed Trump National Doral Miami, and the company invested $250 million in renovating the expansive 800-acre resort a decade ago.

Cadillac’s decision not to renew its title sponsorship of the WGC, coupled with controversial remarks made by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, was perceived as inconsistent with the PGA Tour’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.

At the time, then-Commissioner Tim Finchem cited funding challenges rather than political reasons, and the difficulty in securing a suitable sponsor was heavily influenced by the Doral brand’s association with Donald Trump.

The PGA Tour’s announcement in 2025 that this week’s tournament would be added to the schedule, even before Cadillac’s return as title sponsor, signaled a healing of past divisions.

A palpable sense of excitement has permeated Miami since the tournament’s return was confirmed.

“Golf has always been integral to our city’s narrative, and for many years, the Tour played a crucial role in putting Doral on the map,” stated Doral Mayor Christi Fraga.

“We anticipate a vibrant week filled with incredible golf and an electric atmosphere. We eagerly await celebrating the Tour’s return to Miami alongside the community,” said Vice President and Executive Director Dave Mack, who transitioned from a 13-year career with the Miami Dolphins to spearhead the launch and growth of this event.

The tournament is also organizing a range of family-friendly and fan-centric experiences for attendees.
