Pittsburgh Penguins Roster Shake-up Expected Next Season

Sports news » Pittsburgh Penguins Roster Shake-up Expected Next Season

The Pittsburgh Penguins concluded their 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs campaign in the first round, falling to the Philadelphia Flyers in six games. The Flyers’ performance suggested the Penguins are showing their age and a lack of speed. However, considering the team was reportedly aiming for a rebuild and the draft prospect Gavin McKenna, their performance could be seen as exceeding expectations.

Despite the overachievement, significant questions loom over the current roster and the strategic direction General Manager Kyle Dubas will pursue. Past administrations were reportedly constrained by ownership’s desire to maintain competitiveness around the veteran core of Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, and Evgeni Malkin. Even with Crosby signing an extension and expressing his desire to remain with the team, rumors of a potential trade persisted.

Evgeni Malkin’s future is also a subject of speculation, as he is an unrestricted free agent, and contract negotiations were postponed until after the season. Dubas has been actively retooling the roster mid-season to keep the team competitive, but it remains a rebuilding effort. Now, the rumors surrounding Malkin and Crosby are resurfacing.

Jim Biringer of NHLRumors.com and Full Press Media discussed the Pittsburgh Penguins’ roster on TSN Radio in Montreal, addressing the likelihood of the team returning with the same lineup next season.

When asked about how different the Penguins’ lineup might look in October, Biringer suggested that significant changes are probable, with GM Kyle Dubas facing numerous crucial decisions. He highlighted the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Sidney Crosby’s future, including potential contract extensions or a trade. Similarly, Malkin’s return is uncertain, with discussions about the length of a potential new contract. While Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson have time remaining on their deals, Biringer expressed a personal opinion that Letang no longer possesses the same level of play, hinting that the era of this core group might be concluding, leading to a revamped Penguins team.

Biringer also questioned how many players, such as Connor Dewar and Anthony Mantha, will need to achieve career-best seasons again. The team faces numerous contract decisions and uncertainties regarding their goaltending situation, including whether to retain their current goalies or pursue new ones like Artur Silovs and Stuart Skinner. Ultimately, Biringer concluded that Kyle Dubas has a multitude of questions to answer, and the Penguins are poised to present a different look next season.
