Pittsburgh Penguins Offseason Outlook: Roster Changes and Strategic Options

Sports news ยป Pittsburgh Penguins Offseason Outlook: Roster Changes and Strategic Options

General Manager Kyle Dubas is poised to continue reshaping the Pittsburgh Penguins’ roster. While a complete overhaul is unlikely, significant changes are expected as Dubas aims to inject youth and talent into the team. Potential additions from the AHL, such as Sergei Murashov, Avery Hayes, and Rutger McGroarty, could make the opening day roster. The Penguins are also expected to pursue one or two free agents and at least one player via trade.

While the idea of acquiring superstars like Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews is a distant dream, Dubas may explore opportunities to land impact players. The team’s interest in pending RFA Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars, should he become available, highlights this strategy. There’s also speculation that Dubas might consider moving on from Evgeni Malkin to facilitate a younger lineup.

On the free agency front, Yegor Chinakhov could be a target for a two or three-year bridge deal. Regarding existing players, Mason Marchment’s future is uncertain. If he reaches free agency, he’ll attract considerable interest, particularly from teams like the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, at 30, he might not align with the Penguins’ long-term vision.

Despite some fan dissatisfaction with Kris Letang’s play, his position as a key right-handed defenseman makes a departure unlikely in the immediate future. If new additions are made, Letang’s role could be adjusted with more rest. The team might consider his contract situation after the upcoming season, exploring trade options or respecting his decision to retire. A buyout would present a similar financial outcome to retirement.

While the Vegas Golden Knights’ cap constraints could theoretically open doors for players like Pavel Dorofeyev, his availability is considered highly improbable. The Golden Knights are expected to manage their cap situation through other means.

Acquiring a defenseman like Darnell Nurse, with four years remaining on a substantial contract, is deemed less logical for the Penguins, even if they were to move out Ryan Graves’ contract. Nurse’s defensive struggles and age are significant considerations.
