G740 Iron

PING has unveiled its new G740 iron, specifically designed for golfers seeking maximum game improvement. This innovative club is engineered to provide exceptional distance, high launch, superior forgiveness, and consistent performance, all aimed at helping players reduce their scores.

These custom-fitted G740 irons are now available for pre-order and custom fittings globally at authorized PING retailers. Pricing starts at $202.50 per club with a steel shaft, or $217.50 with a graphite shaft.

John K. Solheim, PING CEO/President, stated that the G740 iron signifies a renewed, focused commitment to the super-game-improvement category. He highlighted its significantly wider sole and larger clubhead, making it PING’s most forgiving and longest iron currently available. Solheim emphasized that the G740 is ideal for golfers needing greater consistency, as its expanded face area improves results on off-center hits, boosting ball speed and forgiveness. Players opting for the G740 will appreciate its performance, particularly its ability to help them hit more greens.

A key design goal for the G740 iron was to maximize ball speed, especially for golfers who struggle with consistent contact. This design ensures shots launch higher, travel further, and effectively hold the green.

Key features of the G740 include a wider, dual-camber sole that strategically lowers and deepens the center of gravity (CG). This design promotes increased ball speed, higher launch, greater distance, and improved stopping power on greens. Utilizing an advanced heat-treating process, PING engineers leveraged the strength of 17-4 stainless steel to create a thinner, larger face that flexes more effectively. This expanded hitting surface maintains ball speed and enhances accuracy on imperfect strikes. Furthermore, the PurFlex cavity badge, featuring three distinct flex zones, precisely manages face flex while refining both feel and acoustics.

Solheim reiterated the importance of the G740’s rapid ball speed, calling it a defining feature. He noted that its high launch profile grants golfers the necessary distance and confidence to use shorter irons into greens. The higher maximum trajectory helps shots land softer and stop closer to the pin. He also confirmed the G740 delivers a satisfying feel and sound.

The G740’s design prioritizes forgiveness, featuring a larger, perimeter-weighted clubhead and an expansive sole. Its cavity-back construction incorporates significant offset, aiding golfers in achieving easier and more consistent airborne shots. The Hydropearl Chrome 2.0 finish further boosts performance, ensuring dependable launch characteristics across diverse playing conditions.

Solheim reflected on PING’s enduring legacy of forgiveness through perimeter weighting, stating it remains a constant source of inspiration. He explained that PING engineers integrate modern design methods with the foundational principles established by his grandfather, Karsten Solheim. The G740 iron exemplifies this approach, offering golfers the essential forgiveness and consistency required to elevate their game and achieve lower scores.

The G740’s standard lofts are meticulously engineered for optimal set configuration, aiming to maximize distance and refine yardage gaps across the entire set for each individual golfer. The four included wedges boast precision-machined faces and grooves for superior control. Furthermore, custom fitters can fine-tune performance using optional ‘power’ (stronger) or ‘retro’ (weaker) loft specifications.

Solheim also highlighted insights from PING’s Arccos partnership, which consistently demonstrate the critical role of properly gapped sets in improving golfer performance. He noted this is particularly relevant for G740 users, who often benefit from transitioning to hybrids or fairway woods around the 5- or 6-iron. He urged all golfers to meticulously review their club configurations to ensure they possess the most effective combination for their game.
