NWSL Power Rankings: Kansas City, Houston, and San Diego Rise

Sports news » NWSL Power Rankings: Kansas City, Houston, and San Diego Rise

The 2025 NWSL season is underway, and the power rankings are shifting. After two weeks of play, there`s already been movement compared to the initial rankings.

Orlando Pride looks like a strong contender for the championship, especially as Gotham FC is finding it hard to score. Kansas City`s dominant win against Washington Spirit has made the top of the league even more competitive.

While the top teams remain relatively stable, the middle of the rankings is still quite uncertain. Many teams are showing flashes of potential but haven`t consistently performed well enough to solidify their position. Some are still finding their rhythm, while others are hinting at their team strengths.

Racing Louisville has experienced a significant drop. They couldn`t maintain their momentum from the first week, and the injury of midfielder Savannah DeMelo adds to their challenges. Their growing list of absent players raises questions about their season ahead.

There`s still plenty of the season left for teams to climb the rankings.

2025 NWSL Power Rankings

Rank Team Change Analysis

1.

Orlando Pride

Orlando is performing at such a high level that they can win even when Barbra Banda doesn`t score. This week, Marta demonstrated the team`s depth of talent, skillfully navigating through defenses and converting penalties.

2.

Kansas City Current

+1

Temwa Chawinga has scored in both games this season, contributing to Kansas City`s excellent start. Their midfield is proving to be a tough challenge for opponents, especially with Lo`eau LaBonta`s precision in penalty kicks.

3.

Washington Spirit

-1

Despite controlling possession and creating opportunities in week two, the Spirit struggled to score. Trinity Rodman`s availability as a substitute is a positive sign for the team moving forward.

4.

NJ/NY Gotham FC

-–

Gotham FC, despite a loss to the league`s top team, showed resilience and exposed some vulnerabilities in their opponent. Rookie Lily Real overcame a difficult start, including an own goal, to deliver a strong 90-minute performance, leading the team in tackles with six.

5.

Seattle Reign FC

+2

Seattle Reign FC are achieving results even without their major offseason signing, Lynn Biyendolo. Having started the season with modest expectations, they have improved and already outperformed a couple of teams that were in the playoffs last season.

6.

North Carolina Courage

Although their tactics are generally well-defined, North Carolina Courage is struggling to find cohesion. While it might be a matter of time, there`s a noticeable lack of connection in their attacking play currently.

7.

Houston Dash

+2

Houston Dash recovered quickly after a slow start on the road, taking control of the game after conceding an early goal. Rookie Maggie Graham is a player to watch, having scored two goals as a substitute in two matches.

8.

Utah Royals

-2

Mina Tanaka and Ally Sentnor are expected to be key players for Utah this season. Their combined effort in scoring an equalizing goal this week was a highlight, though the celebration was short-lived.

9.

Bay FC

+1

Bay FC displayed a more assertive approach this week, which could be the catalyst they need heading into week three. Local players Karlie Lema and Joelle Anderson made crucial contributions to build on their performance.

10.

San Diego Wave FC

+2

San Diego Wave appear to be a team with a clear strategy that they are successfully implementing. New head coach Jonas Eidevall secured his first win of the season, with another standout performance from Gia Corely, who has two goals and an assist in two games.

11.

Angel City FC

Kennedy Fuller is performing exceptionally with two goals in two games, but Angel City has yet to maintain a consistent level of play for the entire 90 minutes to secure a full victory.

12.

Racing Louisville FC

-4

Racing Louisville experienced the biggest drop in rankings this week. This is due to pre-season concerns compounded by new uncertainties following DeMelo`s injury and her being stretchered off the field.

13.

Portland Thorns FC

Reilyn Turner scored a remarkable goal, and the team celebrated their first point of the season. However, this wasn`t enough against a similarly ranked team to significantly improve their power ranking.

14.

Chicago Stars FC

Chicago is now officially on a losing streak. They showed promise in the first 15 minutes of their home opener but struggled for the remainder of the game. Jameese Joseph continues to be a positive highlight for the Stars amidst their challenges.
