Following an investigation into a fan`s behavior, NJ/NY Gotham FC has banned the individual from future events and cancelled their season ticket due to the use of offensive language directed at Orlando Pride player Barbra Banda.
Gotham FC stated on Wednesday that they conducted a comprehensive investigation with the NWSL, staff, and stadium security. This included interviewing numerous witnesses, reviewing security footage and logs, and concluded that the fan breached the NWSL Fan Code of Conduct.
The incident occurred at Sports Illustrated Stadium during Gotham`s 2-0 defeat to Orlando Pride on March 23, prompting the investigation. Gotham previously mentioned that stadium security reacted promptly upon report of the incident, managed the situation, and monitored the individual for the rest of the game. Gotham FC, Orlando Pride, and the NWSL have also publicly expressed their strong support for Banda.
Banda has faced hateful language before, notably from J.K. Rowling in November. Rowling, the author of *Harry Potter*, attacked Banda after she was recognized as BBC`s Woman Footballer of the Year, misgendering her in a post on X. Rowling`s post suggested the award was less efficient than spitting on women.
Orlando Pride, the NWSL Players Association, and Meghann Burke, the PA`s executive director, swiftly defended Banda against Rowling`s remarks. Burke strongly criticized Rowling`s comments.
Burke responded on X, stating that personal insults mixed with racism and lies are the lowest form of online communication. She affirmed Banda`s value to the NWSLPA and declared solidarity with her, directly challenging Rowling.
