NHL Rumors: Nashville Predators Nearing Decision on New General Manager

Sports news » NHL Rumors: Nashville Predators Nearing Decision on New General Manager

During a recent segment on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, hockey insider Elliotte Friedman provided an update on the ongoing search for the Nashville Predators’ next General Manager. This discussion followed his written blog from the GMs Meetings, where the topic was also addressed.

When asked about the progress of Nashville’s GM search by Kyle Bukauskas, who noted the mention of names like former GM Marc Bergevin and Florida assistant GM Brett Peterson, Friedman offered new insights into the timeline and the Predators’ approach to selecting Barry Trotz’s successor. Friedman revealed that sources indicate Nashville is preparing to significantly narrow down its list of candidates within the next one to two weeks, entering a more serious phase of the process.

He highlighted the difficulty in identifying who will make the final shortlist, given the extensive number of individuals the organization has contacted. These contacts have included a diverse group, ranging from experienced former General Managers to promising young talents and prominent figures like Brendan Shanahan. Friedman clarified that not all interactions were formal interviews; many were described as preliminary “conversations” or “get-to-know-you” discussions, with some candidates engaging in multiple Zoom calls.

While the specific profile of the ideal candidate remains unclear, the Predators have engaged with a substantial number of individuals and appear poised to make significant cuts to their pool of potential GMs very soon.

Since Barry Trotz announced his departure as Nashville’s GM, specific details about potential candidates have been scarce. However, it’s known that Brett Peterson, currently Assistant General Manager for the Florida Panthers and recently named GM for Team USA at the World Championships, is among those contacted. The Predators are also reportedly considering other individuals in similar assistant GM roles, potentially following a path seen with the New York Islanders, who promoted from within.

The organizational structure—whether they will also appoint a President of Hockey Operations in addition to a General Manager—has not yet been defined, but figures such as Brendan Shanahan have been interviewed as part of this extensive process. The hockey world is closely watching Nashville’s next move regarding this key leadership position.
