Montreal Canadiens: Near Misses and Trade Attempts

The Montreal Canadiens reportedly came close to acquiring a right-handed defenseman with a long-term contract and also made efforts to trade Patrik Laine.

While there was speculation Montreal aimed for a top-line caliber forward at the recent trade deadline, General Manager Kent Hughes clarified that his comments about a specific deal that “went down to the last minute” but could be revisited in the summer did not pertain to such a forward. The Canadiens reportedly checked in on Nazem Kadri again, but this also was not the particular deal Hughes alluded to.

Montreal was reportedly on the verge of facilitating a trade for Patrik Laine’s contract but ultimately couldn’t finalize the agreement. Furthermore, the Canadiens were close to acquiring a right-shot defenseman with term; despite the details being ironed out, the other team reportedly withdrew from the agreement at the last moment.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Trade Activity and Future Outlook

The Toronto Maple Leafs were reportedly open to offers for nearly their entire roster at the trade deadline. Bobby McMann and Scott Laughton, both seeking significant contract extensions, were eventually moved. McMann garnered interest from the Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, and Columbus Blue Jackets before being traded to Seattle. The Tampa Bay Lightning were among the teams interested in Laughton.

Conversely, players like Max Domi, Simon Benoit, and Calle Jarnkrok did not generate significant trade interest. Oliver Ekman-Larsson desired to remain with the team, though sources indicated he believed he would be traded on Thursday night.

There was speculation surrounding Matthew Knies, with one source suggesting “there was a chance” he could be moved, although there is doubt if these discussions will resume in the offseason.

It is expected that General Manager Brad Treliving will retain his position, but a coaching change wouldn’t be unexpected. The organization plans to engage in discussions with Auston Matthews this offseason regarding the team’s future direction and his role within it. Additionally, a Western Conference team reportedly showed interest in Morgan Rielly.
