NHL Rumors: Minnesota Wild’s Interest in Auston Matthews and Top Centers

Sports news » NHL Rumors: Minnesota Wild’s Interest in Auston Matthews and Top Centers

Do the Minnesota Wild have the assets to acquire Auston Matthews or other top available centers?

The Minnesota Wild’s potential interest in acquiring Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews, should he become available, has been a topic of discussion. Michael Russo of The Athletic was asked about this possibility and whether the Wild possess sufficient assets to make such a trade for Matthews or any other top-tier center.

Russo confirmed that Wild General Manager Bill Guerin would undoubtedly be interested if Auston Matthews were ever placed on the trade market. However, Russo expressed significant skepticism regarding the Wild’s ability to compile the necessary assets for a deal of that magnitude. He suggested that any such trade would likely follow the “Quinn Hughes template,” a benchmark that the Wild’s current prospect and draft pick pool might not meet.

Historically, the Wild have struggled for over two decades to secure a true number one center. Russo noted that while Guerin is known for aggressively pursuing top talent – and would likely target players like Robert Thomas or even a non-center like Brady Tkachuk if they were available – the asset deficit is a major hurdle. The team reportedly tried to make a significant move at the recent trade deadline, including interest in Vincent Trocheck, but it didn’t materialize.

Adding to these concerns, Nick Kypreos from Sportsnet highlighted that the Wild’s asset base might be too depleted after previous moves, making it challenging to even contend for high-value players. Russo reflected on the Marat Khusnutdinov trade, suggesting that if Khusnutdinov were still available, he could have been a valuable asset in a major deal. Currently, the Wild’s key trade chips include prospects like Jesper Wallstedt, Daniil Yurov, and Charlie Stramel, but Russo doubts these would be enough to secure a player of Matthews’ caliber, unless Matthews himself specifically expressed a desire to join Minnesota.

Despite these asset limitations, Bill Guerin is reportedly highly motivated to make a significant acquisition this summer. The Wild previously made strong pushes for both Robert Thomas and Vincent Trocheck, indicating their firm commitment to strengthening the center position. Nevertheless, the primary challenge remains the availability and quality of their trade assets – prospects and draft picks – required to execute a blockbuster trade.
