LA Kings Embark on Coaching Search
The Los Angeles Kings are initiating a search for a new head coach. General Manager Ken Holland confirmed he will be speaking with individuals this week regarding the position. Interim coach D.J. Smith is among the candidates being considered.
Utah Mammoth’s Offseason Outlook
The Utah Mammoth faces key decisions this offseason. With projected cap space of $14.3 million and multiple draft picks in 2026, the team has avenues for roster improvement. They have several pending unrestricted free agents, including Ian Cole, Alexander Kerfoot, Kevin Rooney, Kevin Stenlund, Vitek Vanecek, and Kailer Yamamoto. The Mammoth will likely seek veteran depth on team-friendly contracts.
Furthermore, the team has the potential to integrate promising young talent. Top prospects Tij Iginla and Caleb Desnoyers, both 19, could make the jump to the NHL. Iginla showcased his offensive prowess with 41 goals and 90 points in the WHL, while Desnoyers recorded 78 points in just 45 games.
Evgeni Malkin Open to Playing Elsewhere
Evgeni Malkin has expressed his desire to remain with the Pittsburgh Penguins and retire as a member of the team. However, he has also indicated his willingness to play for another NHL team if the Penguins do not wish to re-sign him. Malkin stated, “Yes,” when asked about the possibility of playing elsewhere.
Malkin was scheduled to discuss his future with GM Kyle Dubas on Friday, with further talks planned with his agent, JP Barry. Malkin is keen to play at least one more season in the NHL and has no intention of returning to the KHL in Russia. He understands that the team may be looking to bring in new talent, acknowledging that it’s a business. Despite this, he hopes another NHL team will offer him an opportunity if a deal with Pittsburgh doesn’t materialize.
Malkin demonstrated that he still possesses significant skill this past season, recording 19 goals and 61 points in 59 games. He transitioned from center to wing as the season progressed.
