Will Ristolainen be in Play This Summer?
Following the Philadelphia Flyers’ recent moves involving Nic Deslauriers and Bobby Brink, speculation has arisen regarding the future of defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period suggested on the TFP Hotstove that Ristolainen, who remained with the team past the trade deadline, could be a candidate for an offseason move or a trade early next season.
Peter Berce questioned what else General Manager Danny Briere and the Flyers aimed to accomplish after the trade deadline, particularly given their proximity to other deals besides the Bobby Brink transaction.
Pagnotta confirmed the Flyers’ moves of Bobby Brink to Minnesota and Nic Deslauriers to Carolina, but highlighted that a trade involving Rasmus Ristolainen was “very, very, very close” to completion. A deal was reportedly on the table, initially appealing to the Flyers, but ultimately fell through due to “second thoughts” at the last minute. Despite liking the proposed return, the Flyers opted to retain Ristolainen. He will enter the final year of his contract next season with a $5.1 million cap hit and no-trade protection. Pagnotta hinted that Ristolainen’s name will likely resurface in trade discussions, particularly around next season’s deadline.
Interest in Ristolainen during the deadline was significant, with teams like the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens reportedly involved. Montreal, in particular, saw deals for Ristolainen fall apart at the eleventh hour. The Flyers could re-explore a trade for the defenseman in the offseason, though his injury history and recovery might influence his market value. Previously, the Flyers were seeking a substantial return, comparable to a Brandon Carlo-type package, which included a first-round pick alongside a prospect or an NHL-ready player.
The future direction under GM Danny Briere, especially concerning Ristolainen, remains a key point of interest for the Flyers.
