The question of whether the greatest goal scorer in NHL history has played his final game in Toronto is still open. Alex Ovechkin informed John Walton, the Washington Capitals’ Radio Play-by-Play Voice, that he will postpone his decision until the summer after consulting with his family.
This statement gained significant traction before the Capitals’ game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night, fueling ongoing speculation about Alex Ovechkin’s future. Will he return for another season, retire, or head back to Russia to play in the KHL?
As NHLRumors.com has reported, the ultimate decision regarding Ovechkinโs future rests solely with him, and he is keeping his intentions private. Speaking with reporters in Toronto prior to the game, Ovechkin elaborated on his earlier comments.
John Walton: โAlex, there has been a lot of speculation about whether or not this will be your final season. Have you made that decision?โ
Ovechkin: โNot yet. Weโre going to make a decision in the summer. I have to talk to my family with Ted (Leonsis), with KP, Mike, and we have to make a decision in the summer.โ
Addressing the reporters in Toronto, he added, โItโs one thing if I was 35 or 25, but when you are 40, you have to think about the future.โ
The Washington Capitals face a significant potential void if Ovechkin departs. This season, he has accumulated 61 points, with 31 goals and 30 assists. Replacing such production will undoubtedly be a challenge. However, his current health status and the team’s offseason moves will also play a role in his decision.
Despite the uncertainty, Ovechkin conveyed to Dave McCarthy of NHL.com and SiriusXM NHL Network Radio that his passion for the game remains strong.
โYeah, Iโm still enjoy it. Iโm still having fun and happy to be with the boys in the locker room,โ Ovechkin said.
He has consistently stated that he is unsure if this will be his final season and will continue to weigh his options. Whether he will have a farewell tour or a formal retirement announcement is yet to be seen, as each player navigates their exit from the game differently.
Ovechkin jokingly suggested he will have a decision by the first day of summer. Alex Ovechkin has also been nominated for the Bill Masterton Trophy by the Washington Chapter of the PHWA.
There are many who hope to see Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby conclude their illustrious careers together.
