Tottenham Finalizes £85m Savinho Deal, Nears Marmoush Signing
Tottenham Hotspur is on the verge of securing two new signings, reaching an agreement for Manchester City's Savinho and nearing a deal for Omar Marmoush.
Spurs have agreed to a package worth £85 million for Savinho. The initial transfer fee is set at £75 million, with an additional £10 million in potential add-ons. It is understood that approximately £5 million of these bonuses are practically guaranteed, suggesting Manchester City could receive a minimum of £80 million from the transfer.
The 22-year-old Brazilian international is expected to undergo his medical examination with Tottenham on Friday afternoon.
Furthermore, Tottenham is reportedly making significant progress in negotiations for Marmoush. Talks are described as advancing well and moving in a positive direction.
This potential double acquisition comes after a period of extensive spending by Tottenham this summer, with over £200 million already invested in six first-team players. Notable expenditures include £185 million for midfielders Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes, acquired from Newcastle and West Ham, respectively. Jan Paul van Hecke also joined from Brighton for £52 million to fill the gap left by Cristian Romero, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Martin Dubravka were all signed on free transfers.
The sale of Savinho would represent a club record for Manchester City, surpassing the £82 million fee received from Julian Alvarez's move to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024. Savinho has played a supplementary role since his arrival at City in 2024, starting only seven of his 24 Premier League appearances last season, during which he scored one goal and provided two assists.
Spurs' Substantial Spending Explained
Explaining Tottenham's capacity for such significant investment this summer, Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge highlighted the club's robust financial health. He stated that there are no concerns regarding Premier League financial regulations, attributing this to consistent European qualification over the past two decades and substantial revenue generated from the stadium through various events like boxing, concerts, and NFL games. Deloitte's Money League rankings indicate Tottenham Hotspur has now surpassed Chelsea to become the ninth wealthiest club globally, with annual revenues of £549.2 million.
Moreover, Tottenham is identified as a club benefiting from the Premier League's transition from Financial Fair Play (FFP) to the squad cost ratio. This, combined with a strategic shift under new leadership following Daniel Levy's departure at the beginning of last season, signifies a strong commitment to investing in the first team to compete at the highest level, fulfilling promises made to fans.
Maresca Confirms Savinho's Desire to Leave
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has acknowledged that Savinho had indicated his intention to leave the club from the outset of the summer transfer window. Maresca, preparing for his first season in charge following Pep Guardiola's departure, noted that players who wish to move on are difficult to retain.
Maresca stated, "It is quite clear when the player wants to leave, then it is complicated to convince them to stay. It happened with Rodri and the same thing is happening with Savinho. Since day one, he has asked me that he wants to leave. So now we are waiting. But it's complicated." He elaborated that players seeking new challenges, opportunities to play more minutes, or returns to Spain often make it difficult to persuade them to stay.
City's Need to Replace Departures
Sky Sports News reporter Ben Ransom commented on the situation at Manchester City, suggesting that both Savinho and Marmoush are effectively surplus to requirements, a fact made apparent throughout the summer. While manager Enzo Maresca has indicated that players are welcome to stay and compete for a place, he also understands when a player desires first-team football that is not guaranteed. In such cases, the club is willing to consider acceptable offers.
Ransom added, "City would need to replace these players. They would definitely, I'd say, have to replace one. They would like to and would aim to replace two. But the transfer window is closing in less than a fortnight. These are big positions to fill so late in the window."
